We had the good fortune of connecting with Seung Jun Sim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Seung Jun, what inspires you?
I draw inspiration from a multitude of sources that have shaped my life. Having lived in various countries, I’ve been fortunate to experience diverse cultures, languages, and ways of life. This global perspective allows me to apply in my designs with richness and depth, as I incorporate elements from different cultures and draw upon my own experiences to create something truly unique.
Moreover, I view the world as a collection of “characters,” each with its own story and essence. This perspective allows me to see beyond the surface and delve into the deeper layers of human experience, regardless of the environment I find myself in. Whether it’s the bustling streets of a metropolis or the quiet serenity of nature, I am inspired by the interactions between people and their surroundings.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is a reflection of my journey, my experiences, and my passion for creating meaningful designs that resonate with people on a deep level. Pulling the aethentic of storytelling into physical product evokes emotions, and connect with ites audience on a personal level.
Utilizing these elements allows me to be proud because the features blends from different cultures and disciplines to create outstanding design. Regardless of working brand project, product design, or piece of artwork, I always strive to infuse authenticity and originality into my work.
Understanding and navigating different cultural norms to language barriers and new environment was one of the challenges in my journey, However, each experience values meaningful experience, teaching me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance. Through this challenge, the key lessons were to learn the power of collaboration and teamwork. Each person’s skills and vision achieved myself to assimilate more than what I have on my own.
As for what I want the world to know about me and my brand, it’s that I am committed to creating designs that not only look beautiful but also have depth and meaning. My story is one of exploration, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the richness and diversity of the world we live in. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own unique perspectives and celebrate the beauty of cultural diversity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Considering it was a week-long trip, I recommend New York City.
The choice is based on my personal preference, but I liked the mood of various combinations of culture in Manhattan. The relaxation, exploration, and experience are all in this one area.
Each day, for any meal, I would bring my friends to the town known as “little (country).” As anyone who sees this place by name, people may recognize that specific area contains the concept of the country. Crossing a few streets converts the mood from New York to that country. As long as my experience, the mood change in this area was dynamic, and I felt I was traveling the world.
Once the place to eat is solved, the next stop will be bringing them to a small, cozy cafe or street along with authentic museums that New York operates. Regardless of the “famous/Michelin” place, most of Manhattan was comfortable enough that every time slot approached me with different vibes.
Not thinking about the time period of “week long,” experiencing the place as a “local people” allows people to experience the local life from the closest perspective. As such, these will be my plans if my friend asks me for the area in which to have the best time ever.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my journey, my accomplishments, and my designs to every person I have had the privilege of meeting throughout my life. Each interaction, whether brief or profound, has left an indelible mark on me, shaping my perspective and influencing my work. From the authors of history books to the guardians of cultural records, I am thankful for their dedication to preserving and sharing knowledge. Understanding the origins of different cultural categories and design elements allows me to give credit where it’s due and to honor the diverse traditions that enrich our world.
