We had the good fortune of connecting with Serena Muhammad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Serena, what do you attribute your success to?
Purpose! I truly believe this is my calling in life to pursue this mission. I believe every human being has a purpose on earth 🌎 and a gift 🎁—whether in art, sports, math, science, comedy, or communication. Mine is teaching. I teach children science 🧪 through nature 🌳 or creation 🦋. I educate them about science 🧬, community, how to treat each other, and what’s healthy for our bodies. We can learn all of this from observing creation. It doesn’t matter your religion, race, socioeconomic status, sex, or gender! These are universal principles from whoever or whatever entity or energy exists.
The way I teach is universal; my company’s principles should appeal to every human being and every child. That’s the success of my brand: teaching science in a fun 🤩, interactive, hands-on manner so that learning can be appreciated and loved 🥰 by every child in the universe 🪐.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Firstly, no, it wasn’t easy, but it is meaningful and purposeful. Nothing means more to me than my freedom! I feel free owning my own business. Even if I don’t make money 💴, I’m still free! In my business, we are not all about the money—though money is important for paying bills! We are teachers who genuinely care about your kids’ learning! We love what we do; we believe in our mission and will do anything to accomplish it. This is not just a job; it’s a mission to educate children in the best way we can to foster a love for learning beyond the classroom—not just to pass a test unless it’s the test of life.
I got here through hard work, determination, and faith! Honestly, I’m most proud of my amazing STEAM team and how awesome everyone is. We participated in Boy Scouts of America’s yearly jamboree, teaching 1,500 boys—and we killed it!!! My team was incredible; no one could deny it. We take it to another level because we love what we do! I’m excited about what the future will bring. My goal is to become a million-dollar education company, and I believe that with the right team, I can achieve it!
I overcame struggles with the help and support of those who believed in me and faith in The Creator! I’ve learned along the way that the saying, everything you need to learn in life you learned in kindergarten, it’s true ! It will get you through life if you continue to practice it! Be kind, honest, generous; be a good friend; listen; help others… I want the world 🌍 to know that we care about children. Science 🧪 is here to help us! If we are quiet 🤫 and observe and respect creation (Mother Earth), she will provide us with everything we need to live a healthy, peaceful, and prosperous life for ourselves, our children, and generations to come. At Science 🧪 Creations, we learn science from creation! Science Creations, we bring science 🧪 to life!!! 🌳
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always take people to Stone Mountain Park! It’s a peaceful spot for reflection and meditation 🧘🏾♀️ where my company was born. We would stay at the campgrounds for a week. Stone Mountain Village has local small Black businesses where we would eat—like Sweet Potato 🍠 Cafe. We would rent bikes 🚲 from Aztec Bikes and visit Stillwell’s crystal 🔮 shop on Main Stret. We might go kayaking at the lake and climb the mountain. We would go get tea 🫖 30 minutes away at Jayida Che in the community where I grew up at East Lake near the Masjid. There they would meet people who have known me for 30 years.
I might take them to the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam ☪️ on Friday so they can learn about my background and foundation before visiting the Mohammed School of Atlanta down the street. We would visit the school garden, Firdous Community School Garden, where I volunteer and plant sunflowers 🌻. We might also visit inside Warith Deen Mohammed High School where I graduated 30 years ago. This is my community; this is my life. Then we would head back down Memorial Drive to the mountain ⛰️ and sleep under the night stars ✨.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mentor: Hajjah Ameenah of Hajjah’s House 🏠—a self-taught educator who taught me how to teach, run a business, and be a Black woman who is an independent thinker.
My mother: who gave me the freedom to explore nature alone and didn’t keep me in a box 📦.
My sister/publisher: Ruqayyah Muhammad of Deep Roots Books 📚 in South Africa who has always believed in me without fail. She helped me publish three books at an affordable cost 💲 and has always been patient with me throughout the process.
My daughters: Sadiyyah and Sajdah who have been patient with me as their mother; they continue to show me love 💕, always tell me the truth—even when it hurts—and have given me loans when no one else would.
Ifraj Sabree: a trusted friend who always gives me sound advice, listens to my problems, and never abandoned me even when I was at my lowest.
The Muhammad & Perry family: my family who never disowned me no matter what crazy things I might do to embarrass them.
