Meet Serena Bautista: Acrylic Artist & Owner of Banileja Art

We had the good fortune of connecting with Serena Bautista and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Serena, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is key for going after the lifestyle you want. I don’t want to be a person that wonders ‘what if?’. Risk taking has set the tone for what it means to be successful for me. Without calculated risk there would be no change. Believing in yourself is the difference between followers and leaders.
Throughout my life and career, I have experienced some failure. Having a determined mindset has given me the chance to adapt, take notes, plan strategically, and make necessary changes. I have also learned balance from risk-taking; to set a schedule, and say no to certain opportunities for a peace of mind.
I believe if things do not go according to plan, it was not meant to be. (“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” Prov 16:9)
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m super excited about participating in my first art show: Melanin Showcase 06/26/21. Its a chance for locals to come out and see some of my diverse artwork.
Plenty of research and risk taking has landed me where I am today. It has not been easy but I have learned how important it is to prioritize. I have had some sleepless nights staying up to finish a project by a deadline. Getting 2 hours of sleep and running off coffee and breakfast for the next 9. By managing my time to be creative (doing research, sketching or painting) I can rest knowing I was productive. I know how important it is for me to function at my best creatively.
I want the world to know that anything is possible with God. I never thought in 1,000,000 years that I would be an artist and entrepreneur.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shaquille Nelson is such an authentic person, my lover and best friend. He has supported me in all my endeavors. I can count on him to always give 100% honest feedback. He’s been there to lend an ear for some of my off the wall art ideas. When I’m struggling with artists block he helps me see things through a different perspective. He reassures me when I’m feeling overwhelmed with different projects and second guessing myself.
Awet Gebrehiwot is a Godsend! Extremely wise, encouraging, and so full of love. I’m blessed to have a true friendship that has evolved throughout the years. She has always seen the best in me and believed in me when I couldn’t.
Last but certainly not least; Without God, I am nothing. Everything I have (gifts and talents included) all come from Him. I am forever grateful for this life I get to live.
