We had the good fortune of connecting with Sequoyah Matoaka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sequoyah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was to just start. I started nails to save me some money and fell in love immediately. I knew I loved what I was doing and I wanted to take it serious so I just started; no thought process, lol. While doing nails everything else just fell in place and that’s how my acrylic system was born.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Wheew. So many questions at once. What sets me apart from others is me. I love being different, original, not like the others. Always been this way. I am a nail artist who loves to create freestyle sets because it allows me to have complete control over the set. I get excited seeing what I create from a blank canvas and seeing my clients excitement. I also get excited when people leave awesome reviews about BOTH services and products because my products are made from hand. Honestly, prayer and a change of mindset got me to where I am at today. No it wasn’t easy and at times it still isn’t but because I know all hard-work has to pay off I believe that one day all my dreams will come true. I want the world to know that I am manufacturer and owner of an awesome acrylic system that was handmade by me. All products I create are either done alone or with my family. I want the world to know that if I can do it, so can you. Just believe, have faith and put in the work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Favorite spots in my city. So, I’m born and raised in Charleston, SC and we’re big on seafood. So I would get a crab box from B&G’s and go sit on the battery and feel the breeze by the water. Then we will hit up the mall or go check out some local boutiques. We have several beaches here and although I’m not a big fan(no judging) we would go and let our hair down and enjoy the sand in between our toes. I’m more of a homebody so unless I’m traveling out of town we would stay in the house and play some games and have a few drinks. Oh wait, we will also definitely go downtown and bar hop, lol
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Who deserve recognition? I love this question. God first and foremost. I wouldn’t be where I am without my faith and grace. Secondly, my family. My husband, my kids, my sister who is also my mentor. Thirdly, my clients. They started with me from the bottom and saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. Lastly, my social media (Facebook) friends. They encouraged me, pour into me and boosted my confidence when I didn’t believe in myself. I want to say THANK YOU EVERYONE. I appreciate you so much.
