We had the good fortune of connecting with Selamawit Shiferaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selamawit, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to be my own boss and enjoy the freedom to make my own decisions. I also aimed to create a welcoming, aesthetically pleasing space for other entrepreneurs to thrive. Although I knew starting a business would be challenging and involve risks, I was prepared to invest in myself and make sacrifices for long-term success. I believed in the potential of the beauty industry, which is constantly evolving, and saw a growing demand for independent workspaces where entrepreneurs could express their creativity freely. At Boss Beauty Salon Suites, we offer a unique opportunity for beauty professionals to work in a setting that allows them to explore their creativity and access their suites 24/7, unlike the limitations often found in traditional salons.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is my willingness to dive into new challenges and get hands-on with every aspect of my business. I’m not interested in taking the easy route; if I can paint, nail, or build something myself, I will. I find immense satisfaction in creating from scratch and being directly involved in the process.
I’m proud of managing two successful salon suites, despite the difficulties. Starting a business is tough, and my first location took a year and triple the expected cost due to unreliable contractors. I faced these challenges by staying determined and prepared for the ups and downs.
Through this journey, I’ve learned the importance of thoroughly vetting those I hire. I’m not just a pretty face; I’m a determined hustler who turns opportunities into successful ventures. Building Boss Beauty Salon Suites has been my passion, and watching it grow while interacting with diverse entrepreneurs brings me great joy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for the weekend, I’d start by going out for a meal because I’m a big foodie, especially when it comes to healthy options. We’d kick things off at True Food at Lenox Mall, and for brunch, Toast on Lenox—shoutout to my friend Harper for their incredible French toast and pancakes. For drinks and socializing, I’d recommend Batsi’s on Buford Highway for great entertainment. If you’re in the mood for a taste of Mexico, Tulum is a fantastic choice. Lastly, Copper Cove is perfect for a fun night out with good food, hookah, and the chance to spot a celebrity.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my business partner and close friend who believed in the vision and took the risk alongside me. I’m also incredibly grateful to my dad for supporting all my dreams, no matter how ambitious they seemed. A big thanks to my friends, especially those with their own businesses, for their constant motivation and invaluable advice. I’ve always felt supported by a strong network. Lastly, a special thank you to the city of Chamblee, GA, for being so responsive and ensuring everything was handled properly and promptly.
