We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Edwards and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, what’s your definition for success?
In my eyes.. Success is showing someone else they CAN. If you can teach at least one person through your story, through the example that you are setting by pursuing your goals relentlessly and overcoming adversity whenever it may arise.. Then you have achieved success. Success is the empowerment of others through the development of self.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Everyone has a story, I started out as a creative that was reluctant to share their’s. So initially my art was skilled but hollow. It lacked emotion. It lacked relatability. It wasn’t until I had a near death experience that put me in the hospital for about a month, that I began developing a new outlook that propelled me to share my story. As I developed even further I realized a lot of people had stories that they didn’t have the ability to share but they needed to be told; I became an advocate for them as well. What sets me apart from most is that I understand enough about the technical side of creative writing that I can easily identify creative ways to utilize literary devices and structure to create compound pieces that are not only complex but simple at the same time. That’s an oxymoron, Lol. But those that have heard my work know exactly what I mean. Everything I learn along the way I find a way to fit it into the puzzle that is my artistry. I want the world to know that no matter how much it tries to break Wes Lee The Wordsmith that it’ll only make my music and poetry that much better. Everything we create exemplifies growth and honest introspection. I am most proud of my latest project “COPE” out now on all streaming platforms.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
1. If you come visit me our first stop will be the studio no matter where I am! 2. After that we would go to Tybee island, 3. stop and grab a vegan dessert from Layers by Lo 4. Go to the Grove on a Saturday night the spot has 3 floors and a bar on every floor 5. Forsyth park and climb trees and just relax on a warm sunny day 6. I love a good movie so the movie theater is definitely a must 7. And last but not least… Ice Cream, the spot doesn’t really matter. I love me some ice cream.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a thanks to my parents, my community, my brothers, my college professors, my uncle, my girlfriend, her family, my supporters, my HBCU and any and everyone else that support me. I always say “if you all were not here to listen to my artistry then I might as well just be writing in a diary.”
