We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Blair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
For years after Peter and I started Ranney Blair, we would grind all day, come home to eat dinner with our families, and then work until 10pm-12am. While some of that was necessary to get the company off of the ground, it was not sustainable.

Our team has since grown to 9 employees and I do everything I can to allow a great work life balance for everyone. Most recently, I have delved into Agile ways of working in order to get a better handle on each individuals workload capacity and not exceed that. We all work extremely hard during work hours, but I never want to see an email or phone call from our team after work hours. That would mean the workload is not achievable and now work is taking over their time with their families or to enjoy their hobbies. If they feel they have to work all the time, it’s a quick path to burnout.

As a company, there are always areas to improve, but work life balance is something we do very well.

What should our readers know about your business?
Ranney Blair is not your average remodeling company. As the only NARI Accredited Remodeling Company in the state of Georgia, they offer a transparent and turnkey approach to your remodel. With six of their nine employees focused on planning and design before the project moves into the build phase, their emphasis is on ensuring that the build moves faster and smoother.

Ranney Blair’s success story began with its founders, Scott and Peter, who initially did everything for the company, from selling to performing labor. Despite facing both great and stressful times, they remained committed to their vision, and today, their business continues to thrive, thanks to their adoption of the highly effective EOS methods. Every quarter, each employee sets a goal to progress personally in their role or improve an aspect of the business, resulting in constant improvement across all facets of their operations.

At Ranney Blair, they believe that something is better than nothing, which is why they encourage taking the next step and doing something, even if it’s not perfect. By stacking small layers of improvement, they create something to be proud of at the end of the day.

Above all, Ranney Blair is committed to delivering an exceptional customer experience. While many remodelers can deliver a nice-looking finished product, the experience can often leave a sour taste. That’s why Ranney Blair focuses on the journey and continuously fine-tunes it to make it better.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When family and friends come in town, we love going to downtown Roswell, Woodstock, or the Avalon to enjoy some great food and drink, and the experiences around it. We’d most certainly head down to Georgia Tech to catch one of the sports that are in season and take the boat out on the water.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
You may want to start playing the Oscar’s music if I am going to try to get through everyone who helped and mentored us to get where we are. All of the support we received is what allowed us to get where we are today.

In the early years of the business, it was very obviously our wives, Christy and Holly. With our first kid on the way and Peter and Holly with a young baby, it was a huge leap to leave the stability and comfort of the corporate world. The support of our wives allowed us to do something we were passionate about.

As we stabilized our company, we hired Kyle Hunt (Remodelers on the Rise) as our business coach. Kyle put us on the path to really start growing our company. As part of Kyle’s coaching, we had monthly group calls with a handful of other remodelers from around the country (Anthony Slabaugh Remodeling & Design, McManus Kitchen and Bath, Gehman Design Remodeling, and Meridian Design Construction). We owe a lot to all of them for sharing insights into their businesses that we adopted and are now foundations of our company.
