We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott And Kayley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott and Kayley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind Southern Huynhs is the love we have for each other’s culture and traditions. We both share the same life goals, all while striving to live a life full of adventures through family, travel and food. Honestly, when it comes down to it, our tight-knit family is the most important factor in our success as content creators. Having two families come together with very different cultures could have gone one of two ways; an utter disaster or a total success. It has not always been easy and we have learned a lot on our journey, but our success story is built day-by-day with love, open-mindness, and an all-around love for food and family.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets us apart from others is our family dynamic. Scott, born in the southern part of Vietnam and Kayley, born in southern Georgia, come together with a blend of two extreme culture differences. You will often see Scott wearing full western attire, from cowboy hat to boots, while Kayley can be seen in traditional Vietnamese Ao Dai.
From this venture, we’re most proud of how the channel really brings our family closer together as we showcase our everyday life to our audience. Our interactions are authentic and never an act for the camera.
We’re excited about the expansion of our channel to include international traveling with our young children and see their excitement, curiosity and joy as they experience cultures and cuisine that they’re not familiar with.
Our channel has gotten to where it is today in large part due to the unconditional support we have for each other and our family encouragement and participation in our content. It would’ve been a very difficult journey if it wasn’t a cohesive effort of our family. We are only in the infancy of our channel but we look forward to our future adventures and the opportunity to reach a deep and diverse group of audience.
It never felt like a challenge to embrace each other’s culture and tradition because we have an adventurous nature. We embrace being out of our comfort zone to truly find out what we’re capable of and the experience that would be missed if we don’t go off the beaten path. During our travels, it doesn’t always go as planned but the journey is well worth it.
As we continue to grow, the lesson that we constantly battle is with patience. Adapting to imperfections along the journey helps us stay focused and not be distracted on the path to our goal.
Our brand revolves around family, travel, culture and food. We hope that our content can connect with our audience and remind them of their own personal experience through our videos. We’re a family that continuously seeks for the next adventure while enjoying every step of the journey!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s easy! If you know us, Ma and Co Ba have the food covered! As far as local entertainment, we would definitely start our weekend off with a camping trip. We have a camper and this is one of our favorite ways to get in a short ‘get-away.’ If it is winter, we are heading north to Vogel State Park and stopping by the local store for its famous Boiled Peanuts. If it’s summer, we are going to Old Federal Campground on Lake Lanier. Later in the week, we may do some sight seeing at the vineyards in North Georgia; Wolf Mountain is our favorite. The wine and scenery are superb! For a night out, we’d make a stop at Kimball House for cold water oysters and then head to try a new cocktail bar. We love trying new places! If it’s sushi we want, Yokohama Sushi it is. While we are in the area, we’d explore more of Buford Hwy! We could spend the entire week there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Scott’s sister, Jaclyn was the initial inspiration for our social media content. She’s an amazing chef who expresses the love for her family through food. Known as “Cô Ba” to her nieces and nephews, which translates to third aunt in Vietnamese, she brings our family together at the dinner table to enjoy good food and conversations with her easy laugh and cheery personality.
On a random occasion, during one of Jaclyn’s meal preparations, Kayley started recording and documenting her cooking while providing commentary. Kayley uploaded the video on her Instagram’s page and received great feedback. Jaclyn’s mouth-watering food paired with Kayley’s adventurous palate for Vietnamese cuisine was a match made in heaven and has been the foundation of our inspiration.
From there, we created our channel, Southern Huynhs.
