We had the good fortune of connecting with Savannah & Greg Herr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Savannah & Greg, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
We embrace risk when it presents itself as taking risks has led us to where we are today. From moving in together across borders three months after meeting, to us both going full-time as self-employed wedding photographers just a couple years later. There are endless risks we’ve taken, but wouldn’t be doing what we love everyday together if we had played it safe!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our business, Authentic Collective, was founded in 2018. Savannah started the business after moving to Georgia from British Columbia and pursuing her passion for photography. After a successful first year, and bringing Greg as a second shooter to multiple weddings, Savannah had maximized the potential of the business with one employee and booked enough weddings to allow Greg to join the team. It was not easy making this decision, as Greg was in an extremely competitive role with a leading consulting firm, with great growth potential and stable income. We had many sleepless nights but once we hit some budgetary goals, the decision was much easier. Clear planning and milestones led what was initially a wild dream into fruition. Along the way we have learned the value of clear communication, and clear roles. Spending virtually all of our time together may seem challenging to some, but our open line of communication makes our relationship stronger than ever. Honestly, at times during weddings we don’t even have to talk to know what each other want. Our roles being defined not only ensures all of the needs of our couples are addressed in a timely manner but also maximizes each of our unique strengths. Greg handles more of the operational tasks, day to day communication and accounting/financials, while Savannah takes on more creative roles doing all of our photography editing, website, blogs etc. Greg is convinced there isn’t a creative thing Savannah isn’t good at. As a married photo/video team, we’re able to provide unique experiences that stand out from others in our market. We’ve had our photos taken many times and know how intimidating it can be in front of the camera. This is why our approach to couple sessions + weddings is centered around making our couples feel comfortable and have fun! We do this by providing clear direction and prompts to keep the couples interacting with each other throughout the session and posing that feels natural, not stiff. This results in candid, authentic photographs that truly feels unique to each couple.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, we much prefer the mountains over the city! If we had friends visiting from out of town we’d take them to all our favorite spots in North Georgia. Brasstown Bald is a great spot to watch the sunrise. It’s a short hike with a breathtaking view at the top, often with fog blanketing the mountains below. Cloudland Canyon is an area we shoot at quite a lot, it features a rim trail as well as multiple waterfalls in the canyon below. As much as we like to hike we also love to just find a good spot with a view, set up the hammocks and have a few beers!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our shoutout goes to Savannah’s step dad, James! A photographer himself, he showed Sav the ropes and always encouraged her photography.
