We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarai Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarai, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is to SLOW DOWN. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in bookings, emails, social media, and personal work. Slowing down has helped me process everything that’s coming my way and prioritize how I feel. This allows me to stay in control of the vision and making sure it always aligns with me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work’s main focus is bonding with my subject and making sure they feel comfortable and beautiful. I often play with colors, lighting, set design, styling and makeup. This helps create a fun experience for my subject, my audience, and myself. I got into doing this type of work when I realized the impact I had on how others saw themselves. Everyone deserves to be celebrated and seen!
There’s a lot of things I had to learn in order to run a successful business. A lot of it dealt with boundaries and knowing when to speak up or put my foot down. There was definitely a lot of trial and error to get to where I am now and I learn more with every session. It’s so important to emphasize what works for you! I want experiences to be fun for both myself and my subjects.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start with a cute picnic or walk around the park so that we can catch up and joke around. Spontaneously, we’d probably end up on a bike ride just to enjoy the views & the weather. From the bike ride, I would take them to a restaurant with cheap drinks! I’m thinking Mexican or Thai, I feel like you can’t go wrong with these. We would end the night with karaoke. I love singing and dancing; I’ll give a whole performance! I think it’s a great way to connect with others. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my older sister, Genesis! She’s always there for me and encourages me in my moments of self-doubt. She’s been supportive of me and my work since the very beginning, not just because she’s my sister, but because she genuinely believes in me and my dreams. I don’t know how I would’ve handled certain situations without her wisdom!
