We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Hillmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to impact lives in a tangible, lasting way. I love watching emerging artists find their footing, make new discoveries, and challenge their notion of what’s possible.
I had a strong desire to create a program that would help nurture the skill sets these emerging artists need to thrive in the arts world as dancers, creators and leaders.
I had no idea how to start a business, or how to grow one, or how to run one!
I just had an overwhelming need to begin – and so that’s what I did – I began.
There were obstacles every which way I turned, and no road map, but each step provided an opportunity for possibility. The thought process that got me started and still keeps me going is “let’s see what’s possible”!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My whole life has been steeped in the dance world; from my early years as a professional dancer, to my work as a ballet master, stager, assistant to choreographers, educator and creator. I can honestly say no step along the way has been easy.
The tenacity to continue marks how I’ve overcome challenges, and the joys along the way have made it all worthwhile.
The art I do now through ImmerseATL – is the “art” of planting seeds in emerging artists, and nurturing possibilities in their lives. ImmerseATL is a training and mentorship program that serves contemporary dancers in Atlanta who are roughly ages 16-25. The yearlong mentorship program offers rigorous training, brings the emerging artists into close contact with leaders in the Atlanta arts scene, provides performing opportunities, and immerses them in what it means to live life as a professional artist.
The work it takes to direct this program each year is all encompassing and never dull, but always extremely fulfilling.
Seeing the growth and transformation in each life that passes through the doors at ImmerseATL each year can be overwhelming in the best possible way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A coffee at Dancing Goats in Decatur or at Ponce City Market. Living in Decatur I love most things about it – so drinks and dinner at Leon’s, 246, White Bull or Kimball House are always a good idea, and a walk around the square to take you to Jeni’s Ice Cream is must! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Every person who has poured into me – from teachers and coaches to colleagues and friends – each voice has had a unique part in shaping my journey. The list is lengthy. 🙂
