We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Catherine Conklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah Catherine, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Being an artist is unlike any other career path. There’s no instruction manual, no guidance, no set way of doing things. It’s challenging! And I love it. Creative thinking is a hard to master, and it changes so much day to day. In order to succeed, I have to find the balance of what I think is interesting and unique, and what other people find interesting and unique as well. Artwork is something that has always been rooted in my life, since I was a little girl. I love working hands on and seeing things from other perspectives. There are so many forms to explore, and they all intertwine with one another! I use my photography skills to document and market my business and creations. I use painting and drawing to design logos, cards, and merchandise. And the cherry on it all is the three-dimensional work I create with flower arrangements. Surrounding myself with other creative individuals is the most important part of the whole process! Finding a community and people that inspire you will change everything.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I opened my flower truck almost a year ago with no experience of starting a business! It was very overwhelming, challenging, and I am still learning so much. But that’s what I love about it! The little accomplishments are what keep me going and inspire me to spread joy to others. I hope to inspire others to go after their goals, big or small. I have been able to overcome my challenges by focusing on the small accomplishments, and taking things a little at a time. I have amazing support from other flower trucks, florists, and flower farmers in the Atlanta area. We have an amazing community! What started as a small idea has blossomed into a business and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the Atlanta area and all that it has to offer! Here’s what I do when my besties come in town:
Lunch at 57th Fighter Group Restaurant in Chamblee – great food and amazing view of the airport. They have good drinks and a fun atmosphere and dance floor!
Go up for a ride with Atlanta Biplane (@atlantabiplane) the owner is a friend of mine and he gives amazing flights over the city and Stone Mountain! It’s such a unique way of seeing the city and a great way of supporting another small business!
Dinner at Avellinos in Brookhaven – amazing food and WONDERFUL staff.
Saturday morning Sandy Springs Farmers Market – great local vendors and atmosphere (and of course Mater Day Flower Truck is there!)
Lunch at Brooklyn Cafe in Sandy Springs after the market, best food ever!
Dinner at Treehouse Restaurant – one of my favorite spots and great outdoor seating!
Saturday / Sunday morning coffee at Ira Lane Coffee Truck on Roswell Road – the owner is a friend of mine and will make your day when you go to visit her! A small female owned business!
After coffee, going to volunteer with Solidarity Food Pantry in Sandy Springs. An amazing local non-profit!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A huge shoutout to my family and friends! I could not be where I am today without their support. And of course a big shoutout to the Georgia flower farmers!!!
