We had the good fortune of connecting with Santania Andrews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Santania, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind me starting my business…. The challenges of becoming a single parent eventually fed my ambition of wanting more!! I remember having to drop my baby off at daycare, rush home to do a head, and then clock back into my regular job. I was making the next man rich as I barely made ends meet. At the salon, where I was working I told the manager “I quit” she was flabbergasted lol she said no San why “I said because I’m not making shit that’s why lol”. Remind you I was already fulfilling managers duties without incentives because I was they number 1 stylist. One day they had the big dogs to come down to talk to me and basically try and discourage me from entrepreneurship. I told them if y’all paid me more y’all wouldn’t have to worry about me leaving the salon. However, their exact words to me was “you make your paycheck”! Truth, but the more I made the more I was taxed. Which was a problem because I was only bringing in 48% of pay and in that moment I knew I wanted more for me, my daughter, my upcoming brand.
In 2015, as I began to blossom in my career my role as a parent did too and that’s how
Mah-Xariah’s Dollhouse was established. The joy my daughter brought compares to the blood, sweat and tears of my business. I was happier than ever with my forever brand name, Mah-Xariah’s Dollhouse! In the Dollhouse, I make custom wigs, quick weaves, braids, dreads, natural hair services, and give unlimited love to all clientele.
In 2021, I ventured out to offer lash extensions. I already offered makeup services, therefore, doing lashes completely sealed the deal. In October, I was blessed with a contract job to service children in mental health. As their hairstylist, I have helped redirect their vision.
Being your own boss have its ups and downs, but what job doesn’t. Most weeks I’m completely booked to others only having 10 clients. However, I never let that stopped my grind. On my downtime, I’m always finding ways to perfect my craft. I study. I practice. I invest. I take great pride in my work. To some, it’s just a job, but to me this is my second child. Self taught. Self made. I am my biggest fan.
