We had the good fortune of connecting with Sankan Nyanseor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sankan, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea of me starting The Shoe Slay was simply born from my personal experience growing up as a tall woman with a larger than average shoe size. I was tired of going through the difficulty of finding stylish women’s shoes in my size and constantly enduring the disappointment that came with it. It was a problem that I wanted to solve for myself and other women like me.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Shoe Slay is an online shoe boutique that specializes in providing fashionable and affordable women’s shoes in larger sizes 10-13. I know firsthand that shoe shopping for women can be a very frustrating experience when looking for larger sizes because I go through it myself all the time. With The Shoe Slay, I want to be able to provide stylish options for women who wear larger shoes sizes in an industry where there seems to be very little focus on extended shoe sizes for women. I hope to inspire confidence in women like myself and let them know that beauty is not limited by size and that includes shoe size. A great pair of shoes can do wonders for a woman’s self-esteem and I believe that all women should be able to experience that feeling regardless of their shoe size. I also want to make my customers happy by making their shoe shopping experience an enjoyable one! It has definitely not been a smooth road to get to where I am today. I’ve had many challenges along the way mainly because I’ve never owned and operated a business before and I don’t have a business background. I’ve had to do a large amount of research on topics such as business structures, business taxes, business registration, trademarking, marketing, accounting, etc. Also, I’ve had to learn to step outside of my comfort zone. I’m really a behind the scenes type of person but I’ve learned that I have to step out into the forefront and let people get to know who I am because I am my brand and no one is going to represent The Shoe Slay more than me! Lastly, being that I’m still a fairly new business that’s still trying to grow, I have to do many things myself when it comes to the operation of my business so I wear many hats! But I don’t have any complaints and I love what I do! There are so many components involved in running a business. It’s definitely an ongoing learning process. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but I’ve learned from them and I’m becoming a better businesswoman every day!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For some relaxation and rejuvenation I would go to Jeju Sauna and Spa. The body shampoo service is a must! For entertainment, we could catch a live musical performance at City Winery, get some free Salsa dance lessons and drink Tequila (my fave) at Loca Luna and catch a show at the Fox Theatre. For late night eats, China Dragon on Ponce has the best Chinese food in my opinion! Even though I’ve been on my vegetarian mode lately, I might backslide for their Chinese food lol. I was born and raised in Atlanta, I love my city! There’s so much to do here and I’m still discovering new things all the time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to all of my family and friends who have been so supportive of my business endeavors along the way. It’s their encouragement that keeps me going and pushing forward.
