We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Heuwagen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
As a therapist, I believe it is my responsibility to be a social justice warrior in order to help my clients understand the world around them and their place in it. By exploring intersectionality and positionality, we can better understand who we are and our role(s) in society––perhaps break open limitations and help create change around us. I think by having this knowledge we can create change in our small corners of the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After obtaining my Master’s in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of South Florida, I decided to continue my education at Mercer University School of Medicine in Atlanta by getting my Marriage and Family Therapy degree and sex therapy certification to help individuals looking to explore their sexuality and help couples regain their magical spark. I became interested in the therapy field through my work as a sex educator at the University of South Florida. I enjoyed teaching, but quickly realized one on one conversations with students proved to be more powerful outside of the classroom. So, looking for a new direction in the field began my love for therapy. Now I’m living my dream as a licensed MFT and Sex therapist helping clients from around the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love hanging out in Downtown Roswell––exploring, shopping, and grabbing a bite to eat on the various patios. My favorite tea shop is Zen Tea, which always manages to make me feel warm and fuzzy!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am without the love and support of my family and friends. I’d like to thank Michael, Betsy, Chris, Jessica, Hannah, Kayla, Leah, and all my cousinz for never giving up on me and showing me what it means to be loved. I would also like to thank the faculty and staff at the University of South Florida for encouraging my dreams and giving me the tools to pursue a career in sex therapy. Without their guidance I wouldn’t be doing what I love!
