We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I began my beauty business journey about 5 years ago when I was a full time undergrad student. Balance has been extremely important to me throughout my business. One of the first challenges I had was finding a balance between work and school. I had to learn how to balance taking clients while studying and being on eboard for clubs. After graduating in 2020 I worked full-time doing COVID related work so my schedule changed drastically. I mainly took clients on my days off and in the evenings. My business goals changed as well because I had to consider other streams of income incase of another shutdown I wouldn’t be able to see my clients in person. I stepped into the retail side of beauty and began selling products such as lashes and body butters. One of the main forms of promotion is through social media and content creating was another task I had to incorporate into my schedule. Unfortunately I was relieved of my job which was bittersweet because I was happy to see our lives slowly changing back to normal and now I had the chance to put all my energy into my business. My hard work definitely paid off and I was able to go to beauty school to get my esthetician license by completing a 600 hour program. Currently I work part time and do my business part time. Balance is extremely important with any business. You have to work hard to build & maintain your clientele, promote your business, and strategize new ways to build on what you already have. While it is important to find balance with your business and personal life, it’s also crucial to know when to take a risk and put your all into your business. We should all strive to maintain balance but those imbalances make the experience worth while. When you reflect and see how much your business has grown despite the obstacles it’s very rewarding.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a licensed esthetician for my beauty business Samantha Tamara Beauty. I specialize in makeup artistry and lash extensions. I also offer henna brows, facials, waxing, and classes. I began my journey as a beautician 5 years ago as a makeup artist in college. There were definitely many challenges along the way especially financial difficulties as a college student. Luckily I was able to start a business with a job I am passionate about so it helped me through those hard times. One lesson I learned when I first started was to stay in your own lane. In other words, no matter what you are doing in life its most important you focus on your own growth. Everyone has different goals. paths, and obstacles in life so it’s best to always focus on your own growth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Albany, NY is a very small town but there a few hidden gems. One of my favorite brunch restaurants is Cafe Madison. Albany is also great for hiking because there are so many trails with different views.
