We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Lukowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
The truth is, I think about giving up everyday. I would love to quit. Honestly, giving up sounds amazingly seductive right now – it sounds easy – especially during this stupid Quarantine. But I will never give up. Never. I will die trying. I’ve wanted to be a performer since I was 6 years-old – long before social media and this new misguided notion of the online Influencer. I will never stop – Hell, I don’t even know if I can. The truth is, you have to be your own inspiration. You have to be the reason that you don’t give up. I hate when I hear that stupid actor jargon: “What’s my motivation?” The answer is and has always been: “You!” You are your own motivation. You are the reason you are inspired. You are the reason you never give up. And if you aren’t inspired – get the fuck out of the way – ’cause the rest of us got bills to pay! Anything else is useless. And that’s not vanity or narcissism talking, that’s the pure desire to tell stories so an audience can use empathy as escapism. That’s it. Acting is a 4000 year old tradition and it’s evolving to fit modern technology but it’ s not disappearing. Only a fool or a politician would hijack the art form and think that it is disappearing. Don’t believe me? Well then, ask yourself, what did most people retreat to when this ridiculous Quarantine was first imposed? The answer is media – storytelling. Escapism through entertainment. The human condition is not racial, or sexual, or whatever – it is what it is – it’s drama. And drama is people struggling to overcome a conflict. It is an ancient philosophy that inspires hope in the hopeless. Anything else is just propaganda.
What should our readers know about your business?
Show business is more business than it is show. If there’s no contractual agreement to pay you…then you won’t get paid. That’s it. Social media has really blurred the lines between ‘job’ and ‘hobby’ but that’s the truth of it. If someone is going to make money off of you – then you should be getting paid too – otherwise you are being exploited…and that’s illegal. Acting is a job – treat it like one. Also, if you suck at your job – practice until you get better – otherwise I’d seriously suggest that you quit because the rest of us are struggling to make a living. We love our job – but we hate the bureaucracy and amateurs and divas who screw this profession up for everyone. Too much money and time is being wasted to justify you screwing around with an expensive hobby – remember that stunt performers are literally risking their lives to entertain you – we are here to tell stories for profit. And that profit does NOT make us rich- it merely allows us to afford making more content. So please join our ranks to help us or please get the Hell outta the way, (remember, union or non-union, a small budget contract is 50 – 60 million dollars).
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is nothing to do socially right now – the Quarantine is destroying us both financially and culturally.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
