We had the good fortune of connecting with Sade Nicole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sade, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process for starting my business was all started while shopping at a local mall in my hometown. I would often have trouble finding the right outfit, it seemed as though everything looked the same. Therefore, with no knowledge of sewing I brought my first sewing machine in 2016 and started creating. YouTube really helped me learn the basics for the first few months of having the machine was all trial error. Once I got the basics, I started creating outfits for myself and trying out new designs weekly.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
A self-taught Fashion Designer and Owner of the Sade Nicole brand based in Hartford, CT. When I first started designing my main challenge was finding my voice through fashion. At first, I was redesigning clothing, I would often go to local thrift shops and find cool vintage pieces to redesign. This taught me the structure and foundation of clothing. I started my brand EpicEra which consisted of me redesigning clothing such as denim, camouflage jackets, and creating dad hats. EpicEra was like my baby. I grew so much within the brand, elevating my skills. I participated in local pop-up shops, fashion shows, and even volunteer work. 2019 that’s when I decided to branch off EpicEra and create my fashion brand “Sade Nicole” which are handmade garments, sewn by myself. I didn’t want to confuse my consumers with having Epicera and Sade Nicole all under one being that they both are so different. I do plan on rebranding EpicEra and launching in the near future but for now growing Sade Nicole is my main focus.
In order to stay aligned I often meditate to keep me grounded and ideas fresh in my mind. I face many challenges daily, but these are some ways I get through them. Currently, most excited for the future of Sade Nicole we have grown so much in the last year and gained brand awareness locally and nationally. Some lessons I have learned along the way is consistency as well as authenticity is key to growth within a business. It will never hurt to put yourself out there – take that bet on yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visitng the area I would first take him/her to Parkville Market which is like a local food haul with a wide variety of different types of food from all over the world. I would visit a few local museums located in the downtown area. As for night life I would go bar hopping in the New Haven area which is a great spot for food and drinks all within vicinity of each other.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out God first for blessings with this vision and talent. Sending love to my family and friends who uplifts me daily to keep going. Special shoutout to Chinnyere, a local Fashion Designer in my hometown, who took me under her wing as an intern for her brand. I was able to soak up a lot of information while working under her, she’s such an inspiration as well as a great instructor.
I would always like to give a shoutout to my “right hand man” Nicky “The Engineer” . She basically lives in my head and always helps me with any idea I bring to her- a true gem on earth.
