We had the good fortune of connecting with Sade Guyton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sade, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my brand is making sure that I’m impacting the others around me. What that would like is people coming from any walk of life whether that be men or women and stepping into a better version of themselves through dance.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is that my work comes from real feeling. So art is a place we can go to express free and fearlessly. You can’t teach emotions. They stem from within. And no one is going to be able to do the same work that I do and make it exactly like mines. My work is never going to be a 1,2 step if I tried. Not knocking anyone but it’s just not for me.

What I am most proud of is my perseverance. I’ve dealt with a lot of trauma from losing my son, my child’s father, not having any supportive people around me. That pain I think I just use it to keep me going instead of holding me back or keeping me stagnant.

I got to where I am today by working my ass off. Going all the way with what I wanted no matter what happens. That consisted of me going to college. Training at studios. Practicing in my small one bedroom apartment. Performing at my college showcases, traveling. Falling, messing up and then get it right. Most of all believing in my craft. Knowing who I am and what I stand for and kept going thereafter. Knowing it was nobody like me.

No definitely not easy especially dealing with defeat after defeat. I dealt with it by putting God as the X factor of my life. I think that explains it for everything that happened next.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way was to never lose myself. Don’t ever shrink to be of someone else’s liking. Do it for me. Stay humble and know that God can take it as just as he gave it. Be fearless and give everything your all. Never let someone out work you. Listen to your elders and use your experiences as internships. Never give your all to something you don’t really want to do. Make your gift known.

I want people to know that I’m a fighter. I went through losing my son at 7 weeks old. He was killed by his father. He shook him, he stepped on his head, and threw him across the room. I spent days in the hospital watching him on a ventilator hooked to 20 different medications just to keep the pressures from his head from building up. This is the trauma I’m telling you about. The one that keeps trying to take me down. The trauma that I’m up against everyday. It almost took me way down into a deep depression. I lost my hair. I lost several pounds. Was diagnosed with acid reflux. I still kept going. I still kept dancing. I kept God first. I got out of that depression through an outlet called DANCE. I gained my confidence back, I started buying clothes I’d never fit in after gaining healthy weight back. My hair grew past my shoulders for once. Dance showed me how brave and fearless I was. It drowned out anxiety it drowned out my depression. if I can do it. You can too. Come alive for once.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would go to Africa. I feel like it’s important to know where your roots are and your history behind the way you do things. I’m also a rooted dancer and I like to dance barefoot. Recently just found out that I have a Nigerian name. So I’d definitely say Africa. I’d say one of my favorite spots to visit in AZ is LO-Los chicken and waffles and ATL Wings. Man they have some of the best food. Tempe Town Lake is also a dope spot to come check out if you love outdoors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d definitely say Eric Thomas. He’s had been a great mentor in my life. Both being from Detroit and hungry for success. A lot of my struggles were mended because of this man. Being able to come out of depression after losing my 7 week old son was because of him so definitely give him credibility.
