Meet Ryan Orebaugh | Photographer & Art Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Orebaugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a creative career because it felt like something that was always evolving. Everyday is a new challenge to tell a better and more exciting story. I love that I get to create every day; whether it’s an ad campaign, editorial, social media, or whatever at the end of the day there is something tangible. I’ve always been passionate about art so having this become my job has been incredible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art practice centers around documenting daily life around us; I gravitate towards the beauty in everyday moments. I take this philosophy into all of the work that I do, especially projects where I just get to be a fly on the wall and document the world around me. I feel like my artistic practice is constantly evolving and so my journey in the photography world has had its ups and downs. I think that there is always the battle of where is the next project is coming from or the ever-present imposter syndrome. But that being said, surrounding yourself with people that support you and want to make you better makes the process so much better. I have had some many incredible mentors help me along the way to get to where I am. My professional work is a mix of commercial projects for clients doing photo/video for digital campaigns and more documentary style work for clients where I get to tell their story through my perspective. Both are great challenges and I love getting immersed in a brand’s story and getting run around in their creative playground.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, well first we gotta go to Ponce City Market and get some food from Bottiwalla; that places never disappoints. After walking around there and visiting some of the shops we’d go around Piedmont Park and the Botanical Gardens for a while taking in the weather. At least one of the days we have to go to La Tavola in Virginia Highlands because they’ve got a rotating menu of incredible Italian food and one of the best olive oil cakes I’ve ever had. One day we’ll get out the city and hiking around Kennesaw Mountain to get some fresh air and eat around Marietta Square. I could go on and on but those are just a few things I love.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout the good people at Dunwoody Photo. They gave me my start in the production industry when I was just starting out as a photographer. I learned so much working with them, processing film, color-correction, studying photography and the getting to see the behind the scenes of some of the best photographers on the East Coast. They mentored me, pushed me, and overall have made me the person I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful to them.
