We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My mother. Such a cliche but my mother has been my backbone since I started my journey of music. There hasn’t been anything but genuine support from her since I released my first song. And the way we’ve been able to talk about personal issues since then has been something I will try to embody when I’m a father.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Instead of saying what would separate me, I guess I can speak about what’s brought me together. I am not above anybody.
What’s helped me realize who I can be in music is my vulnerability. There isn’t a time I can remember where I’ve been shy to speak on how I feel. My whole life I’ve worn my heart on my sleeve but people seem to digest it easier to a BPM.
What’s helped me mold my music is my time as a musical theatre performer, which most people don’t know about. The training I put myself through trying to make it to broadway made a lot of the stage/studio work less demanding in music. But being able to tell my own story while being inspired by writers like Lin Manuel Miranda, is what got my music to where it is. Also, damn him for ruining his legacy but Kanye West as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
At the CRIB. Call me boring but I rather ball out on some good beer and food to enjoy in the comfort of the house. Maybe that’s why nobody visits? Haha. But I really am a home body. If I had to choose, I take everybody to reading terminal market here in Philadelphia.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Project feel, I owe you more than I can put into words. Throughout the hardships, loving every one of you has been one of the easiest tasks of being an artist. There will never be a time when I don’t believe in us.
