We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruby “sunshine” Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruby “SunShine”, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is the unshakable guidance of God and the resilient spirit God has given me. This resilience pushes me to persevere, no matter the challenges, and to always follow my North Star—creating a financially equitable world where the wealth gap is closed. With God’s grace and my determination, I never give up, and that steadfastness has been the foundation of my success.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Financial Joy School, stands out because we are deeply committed to empowering Black, Brown, Disabled, and marginalized communities through financial education. We’re more than just financial gaming company and platform; we are a movement focused on closing the wealth gap and creating generational wealth for ALL. One of the things that sets us apart is our use of innovative tools like the LEGACY! Card Game, which makes learning about investing fun and accessible for families. Our mission is driven by a belief that everyone deserves financial education, and we work hard to provide resources that make investing feel attainable, no matter your background.

What I’m most proud of is the tangible impact we’re making. We’ve donated over 10,000 LEGACY! Card Decks to communities in need, empowering families to take their first steps towards financial independence. I’m also excited about our upcoming Financial Family ReUnion Summit, where we’ll kick off our campaign to help 1,000,000 Black, Brown and Disabled families open brokerage accounts and begin building generational wealth.

Getting to where I am today was far from easy. There were numerous challenges, from navigating funding difficulties to overcoming the doubts that come with being an underrepresented entrepreneur. But every challenge reinforced my resilience. I relied on the guidance of God, the support of my community, and the belief that I am doing what I’m meant to do. One key lesson I’ve learned along the way is the importance of staying true to your mission, even when things get tough. People are drawn to authenticity and purpose, and that has helped my business thrive.

What I want the world to know about Financial Joy School is we are having our first in-person summit called the Financial Family ReUnion Summit February 28th, 2025 at the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center. Secondly, that we are here to make a difference. We’re not just another financial education platform; we are about empowerment, joy, and creating lasting change. Our story is rooted in resilience, faith, and the belief that financial knowledge can transform lives. I want to ensure that no family is left behind in the journey to build generational wealth. We’re here to educate, inspire, and create a future where financial equity is a reality for all. https://FinancialJoySchool.com

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Atlanta:

Day 1: Breakfast at Waffle House – No trip to Atlanta is complete without some comfort food from the Waffle House to kick things off.
Day 2: The King Center – We’d dive into history by visiting The King Center, where you can feel the power of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
Day 3: Truist Park – Whether it’s catching a Braves game or just hanging out, the energy at Truist Park is unmatched.
In Baltimore: 4. Day 4: Crust by Mack – For some incredible seafood and unforgettable pies, I’d take them to Crust by Mack. 5. Day 5: Oregon Ridge Park – We’d head to this beautiful park for some hiking and outdoor fun. 6. Day 6: Dinner at BLK Swan – This spot in Harbor East has the best vibe, and their upscale cuisine is amazing. 7. Day 7: Relaxing at Roland Lake – To wrap up the week, we’d hang out by Roland Lake, where it’s peaceful and beautiful, perfect for catching up and soaking in some nature.

This itinerary would balance great food, history, and outdoor fun—everything I love about these cities!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
On this journey, I’ve been fortunate to receive incredible support from many people and organizations. First, I want to shout out Renee and Dan Gallagher, who introduced me to the power of long-term investing and set me on this financial path. Jenny Flores, along with her team at Wells Fargo, believed in the potential of our work and provided our first major community support, which enabled us to donate 10,000 LEGACY! card decks. I’m also deeply grateful to the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center, including Nicola Corzine, Brooke Palizi, Celena Aponte, and Kamy Taylor, for their unwavering belief in our mission. Halcyon House, an extraordinary fellowship for social impact entrepreneurs, and Ollen Douglass, who continues to mentor and encourage me, also deserve special recognition for their ongoing support on my entrepreneurial journey. In addition to the amazing people and organizations that have supported me, I also want to recognize my parents for always being there, my mother for her constant prayers, and my daughter Nia for being my number one supporter. Their love and belief in me have been a source of strength throughout my journey.
