We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruby Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Once I became pregnant with my first child Kennadi, in 2018, I knew I wanted to be a stay at home mom so I can be her 1st teacher and her first influence. I didn’t know how I was going to do this (while making money), but I knew it was a very important goal. One day, during my nesting period, I read an article about he dangers of popular paraffin candles for newborn babies due to their carcinogenic elements. I began vigorously researching an alternative when I came across soy candles. Due to the market for soy candles being so scare, I decided to start making my own. Within a year of starting Scent by Kennadi, a scented soy candle company, I was able to quit my 9-5 and begin raising my baby full-time.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Scent by Kennadi was started in Feb 2019 in Stockton, California. Our mission is to educate others on the toxicity of paraffin candles and suggest a healthier alternative, soy. One of the things that sets us apart is our variety of soy candle collections such as; SBK’s Chakra Collection (compromised of 7 candles that correspond to each chakra), our spring/summer collection which consists of fun bright colored soy candles in various sizes and scents, and our therapeutic line of Rosemary Sage, Lavender, and Peppermint Eucalyptus that provide stress relief, enhances concentration, and purifies/detoxifies indoor air.
SBK is most proud of creating our How to Start a Candle Making Business ebook and helping other people start their business. Dozens of women have reached out to us in gratitude and excitement about launching candle business as well as to share stories of success. Helping others create an additional stream of revenue is very rewarding because financial freedom and creating generation wealth (something you can pass down to your children) is GOALS!
I got to where I am today by being persistent and consistent. I’ve realized it’s not about the pace, it’s about staying active. This has not been an easy lesson to learn and sometimes I still fall short, but as long as I recharge and refocus, I will be back on track in no time. Believe in yourself!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite spots to visit are Ponce City and Krog Street Markets. They have shopping, food, and entertainment all wrapped in one. Ponce City Market’s Rooftop is a favorite of mine because of the miniature golf park and the amazing views.
Piedmont Park and The Beltline are great places to stay active and enjoy nature. The Beltline is miles long and you can walk, jog, or bicycle down it and stop to get something to eat or drink at a whim.
If you’re looking for a fun brunch, Edgewood St is a good place to start. There are numerous restaurants lining both sides of the street. Stick around until nighttime and most of the restaurants turn into a club.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My daughter Kennadi deserves all the recognition for my success. Before having her, I was unorganized, unmotivated, somewhat irresponsible, and all over the place. I became a better person with more drive and tenacity because I know she relies on me. Kennadi is always my encouragement through times of adversity
