We had the good fortune of connecting with Ronald Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ronald, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Huey’s Son Apparel and Accessories because I was not seeing a brand that brought together pop culture and Black history in a modern way. As a multimedia digital artist, I wanted to express my love for the impact African Americans have had historically and culturally today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, what sets me apart is my unwavering passion for creativity and innovation. I strive to infuse every piece of work with authenticity and meaning, drawing from my unique perspective as a Black artist and educator. What excites me most is the ability to use my art as a vehicle for social commentary and change, sparking conversations and challenging perceptions.

My journey to where I am today professionally has been one of dedication, hard work, and continuous learning. It hasn’t always been easy; I’ve faced my fair share of challenges along the way. However, each obstacle has been an opportunity for growth. I’ve overcome social challenges by remaining resilient, adaptable, and focused on my goals. Surrounding myself with a supportive network of mentors, mentees and peers has also been instrumental in navigating through difficult times.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of collaboration, and the power of authenticity. I’ve learned to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success and to always stay true to my artistic vision.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it’s rooted in authenticity, passion, and a commitment to making a difference. Whether through my art or my endeavors with Huey’s Sons, my goal is to empower others, amplify marginalized voices, and inspire positive change. My story is one of resilience, creativity, and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a recent transplant to the city, I don’t have a favorite spot yet. I love the food, but I truly love the history of the city and the options for nontraditional experiences. From paint and sips at strip clubs to bars paired with my favorite cereal, ATL is truly amazing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My passion for all I do started when I was a little quiet kid in the middle of the bus. I was too nerdy for the cool kids and too “cool” for the nerds. I found comfort in the talents that my parents poured into me. I thank my mother and father who saw in me more than I could ever see in myself.
