We had the good fortune of connecting with Rod G. Newman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rod G., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The moment I went to my first job interview and started my first real job working at a factory in High school, I knew that working for someone else’s dreams was not for me. Corporate America was not in my genes. The principles and ideas that I stood for did not match the way of the world. I knew I was different and I wanted to create a business built on a God-given purpose and plan.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand and style is Nostalgic as well as progressive. I am inspired by the past, the present, and future. Trends don’t excite me. True art is created in the heart of a man. Ideas differ from Concepts. When a concept is conceive at that moment I know that it is from a place that I can’t explain but I know that it is true. I am a Visionary, I see things different where most people dare to see or believe. “When I know, I know”. I am where I am today because of patience and humility. You have to learn when to turn on and off the confidence. Being an artist in the world is not that easy because most societies are built on traditions and what’s normal so having to maneuver through it all was challenging at times. People wanted know, “why”. Why I dress the way I dress, rock my hair the way rock my hair, etc. The “Why” is result of your purpose. I am living in my why.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would stop by my executive suite to located downtown Birmingham to discuss new ideas and concepts, those are the type of friends I have. Secondly, I would take them to the historical 4th Avenue District to eat lunch at Green Acres established since the 1940s. Take a walk and get a drink on the south side. Later, that night we would catch a show at The Comedy Club Stardome where all the a-lists, comedians and entertainment acts perform.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout the City of Birmingham for being a Mecca of Inspiration. I have lived and traveled to many places and met some very extraordinary people but the people, the talent that reside here in Birmingham is untapped. A special shout-out goes on to my church; Faith Chapel Christian Center and one of God’s greatest teachers of his word, Pastor Michael D. Moore.
