Meet Robert Upton | Artist and Actor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Upton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, how do you think about risk?
I believe that the only way to reach the next pinnacle in life is to take risks. There is no risk big or small that you shouldn’t take, If you have faith in God, The risks that I’ve taken in life have pushed me to becoming the best version of me in every aspect, it’s what makes me stand out above those who don’t believe. I walk with no fear because God is With me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
With sets me apart from others is that I strive to be unique and I strive to be different. I go against the grain a lot and I am not for social constructs because I understand that in order to be an inventor you must have 1000 experiments fail before you get that one that succeeds. I learned that from looking at the people I look up to like George Washington, Carver WEB Dubois, Booker T. Washington, Thomas Edison, and other artist and actors like Denzel, Washington, Samuel Jackson, and Jay Z. King Conscious is my rap name and I want people to understand that the word conscious means to be woke and I try to stay aware of what I say and what I do which is why I called myself the king of it because I have mastered being awake.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hanging out with friends is actually one of my few things that I try to do consistently and if they were in town, we would probably go to different bowling alleys, skating rinks, paintball, arcades, grabbing a few drinks escape rooms I like to do adventurous stuff! We may go go karting or anything, I’m a really fun guy. I like to go to poetry slams as well jazz festivals. and different place that show art like museums. It just depends on my mood!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to take the August Wilson monologue competition. I want to thank Denzel Washington for inspiring me. I want to thank court theater in Chicago for being a great push in my life. I want to thank Kenwood academy high school for shaping me into the man I am today. I also want to date DuShon brown who passed away for guiding me to being an actor and be my spiritual guide. I want to take Next Showcase Chicago for honing my musical skills specifically, Mark Hubbard. Most importantly, I wanna thank God most of all for being the number one reason for me to keep going every day.
