Meet Robbie Matley | Lead Vocalist & Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robbie Matley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robbie, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I’ve heard a lot that concerts don’t help you grow as an artist/band etc and the main focus is to release music and to promote that only and that’s were you should put all our time and effort into and shows are a small factor. personally for me that is 100% false, shows have been the main success for my band, we connected with so many bands, fans and have made so many connections this way and grew our band faster in one year then the 6 years of dogwood and 4 of those just only releasing music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
the art is really personal to me, this project, band or what u wanna call it is just something I’ve always wanted to do
and with dogwood it’s super personal like your listening to my life and my struggles and If I just i can help people like how music helps me, i think that’s why I’m so personal in the writing sense, it’s like my diary and you can see the growth and degrowth within myself, i don’t know what sets us apart from other bands, i think maybe since we don’t know where we stand on like genres or just in the scene itself in since of how we aren’t new but we are and we are still learning how to do this, maybe that’s what sets us apart, no it wasn’t easy at all but i think sticking to our goals and fully focusing on how we can do this the best we can made us over come a lot of challenges, right now we’re most excited for our new album that’s coming out march 1st, it’s an end of an era and the beginning of a whole new one so we are really excited to show our work and also begin creating and focusing more on who we want to be as band and what we want to make

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
well my best friend Nick and I grew up here together but we’d probably just go to our usually places, best spots in Atlanta, definitely Kuroshio best sushi spot and we are very strict on our sushi’s places that’s how you know that’s its good, 97 Estoria, best lowkey bar like its just really nice and chill just super laid back its never too crowded you’ll have to go see it for yourself oh and flying biscuit love that spot best fried green tomatoes, little five points is top tier everyplace over there is so fun and full of life and culture, its hard cause you know there is a lot of good spots but I’m gonna gatekeep some of them

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
starting out dogwood in 2019, it started as a solo project and I was young and had no idea what the hell i was doing but Tristan (proiectura) I was a huge fan of his music and he had shouted out the first ever single under dogwood and I was like holy shit here’s an a artist that is actually taking notice of my work and then since then we just been hella close, I have to give a lot of credit to my dear friend Tristan (proiectura) he’s my mentor and has taught me everything i know and still to this day he helps us out and gives us a lot of advice and I don’t think dogwood would’ve lasted this long or even still be a thing if it wasn’t for him
