We had the good fortune of connecting with Robbie J. Atkinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robbie J., what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
You will make mistakes. For some people, mistakes equate to failure and failure equates to giving up. For others, that simply means they learned something new and keep moving. A lot of those who have been successful were resilient failures–people unafraid to miss the mark yet still willing to challenge themselves to try again. A lot of that has to do with confidence and self-esteem as well. You can’t hate your way to success and improvement; you have to enjoy the learning process, be patient with the process and practice self-compassion and grace when you make mistakes. This can be hard for perfectionists!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As we approach our fourth year, I find myself realizing the need to return to “the fun.” Working with clients on projects that genuinely set my soul on fire–brings out my sense of adventure, creativity, curiosity, desire to venture out of my comfort zone and have as much fun as possible has been our biggest priority in the creative sense.
That having been said, flowing along with fun projects has allowed us to hone in on better chances at bringing in revenue and makes obstacles that much easier to overcome. I’d say that’s been my biggest lesson–remembering to never abandon that child-like sense of fun in my vocation.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I highly recommend Little Trouble located downtown Atlanta! It’s a comfy restaurant with a cyber punk aesthetic that serves great food, has a mello ambience and makes a great photoshoot spot as well! That general area has a series of restaurants and shops around it that are all unique and contribute to the checksmix of the area’s overal atmosphere. Even better, Jenni’s Splendid Ice Cream is right around the corner so you can have a great dinner and dessert!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This article is dedicated to both of my parents. First, to my (late) Father who was supportive of my process in becoming both a creative and entrepreneur. Not only did he offer me advice to his dying day but he also left resources posthumously to help me with my journey and remind me that I’m not alone. Secondly, my dear, sweet Mom—who has always gone above and beyond to challenge, encourage and help me from childhood to adulthood. I love them both to the moon and back and wouldn’t be here without them.
