We had the good fortune of connecting with Rigved Sathe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rigved, how do you think about risk?
In my view, while taking risks can be beneficial, taking calculated risks is even more advantageous as it enables one to be well-prepared. In 2017, I resigned from my job as I believed I could accomplish more independently, and fortunately, things worked out in my favour. Likewise, in 2019, I accepted an exciting job opportunity in Singapore despite not having any acquaintances or relatives there. Fear should not prevent you from taking risks; it’s important to have confidence in yourself and your work. As the saying goes, “fortune favours the brave.” The experience of taking risks has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and a chance to start anew whenever I’ve felt creatively stuck.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most people want to be heard, seen and understood. I help people find themselves through my work by drawing inspiration from everyday life. Design is not a field where you can simply “fake it till you make it.” Passion is evident in your work. One of my most cherished projects is “Emotive Typography” for its simplicity and humour. While hard work is essential, I believe that luck also plays a significant role in where we end up. In my case, I attribute 70% of my success to my skills and 30% to luck. During my most challenging times in the industry, I felt undervalued and eventually resigned from that job. As a creative, it can be frustrating when projects you’ve invested countless hours into never come to fruition, such as the animated filters I created for Google Duo that were never added to the app. I’ve come to realize that while we can’t control outcomes, we can only hope for the best. It’s also crucial to recognize that as designers, we can’t always produce our best work every time. We should learn to be kind to ourselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Savannah, Georgia is a city full of charm and character. If you’re looking for the best pizza in town, head to Vinnie Van GoGo’s in City Market. This cozy spot serves up delicious pizza that is sure to satisfy your cravings. Plus, the lively atmosphere of City Market makes it a great place to soak up the local culture. For stunning views of the river and unforgettable sunsets, make your way to the Riverfront. Here you can see giant cargo ships sailing by while you relax and take in the sights. If you’re in the mood for a tasty margarita, TopDeck is the place to be. This rooftop bar offers some of the best margaritas in town. For a delicious taco fix, Tacos and Tequila is the spot to be. With their mouthwatering chicken and lamb tacos, you’re sure to be in for a treat. If you’re looking for a fun night out, head to the Totally Awesome Bar. This spot is known for its comedy nights and pool games.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a massive shout-out to my family for their unwavering support in all of my creative pursuits. I wouldn’t have reached where I am today without their encouragement. I would like to thank my former employers and clients for trusting me with their projects, and also my professors from both my undergraduate and master’s studies, who have significantly influenced my design approach.
