We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because it fulfills me in ways that other career choices could not. I love the process of taking an idea and making it a reality. Storytelling. Capturing the emotion and essence of the moment, Helping others share their story through motion pictures. As the old saying goes “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a self-taught professional with humble beginnings, working in the restaurant industry for over a decade gave me invaluable experience performing under constant high pressure while managing the needs of many people. These skills translate to my ability of skillfully directing production teams while on location. Knowing that the pursuit of the American Dream would be an unfulfilling path, four years ago I decided to take my savings and travel around the world where I visited 17 countries in a mere 8 months. This life changing experience was the catapult for me to launch my videography business where I began in the field of travel photo and video. The inspiration I gained while meeting people around the globe has been my motivation to educate and inspire through the power of videography.
Born and raised in Chicago, my love for the city is innate and it is one of my favorite subjects to shoot. I live and breathe videography, constantly learning more about equipment and techniques to grow my ever-expanding skills and expertise.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Coming from the restaurant industry, there are so many places that I have come to love. Wether it was because I have worked there before, or because it was one of my spots to go to after work. There is so much to do in Chicago and all of the neighborhoods with their own personalities. I would say a few places that I really enjoy would be the West Loop, Logan Square, Wicker Park, and Pilsen. West Loop has great upscale bars and restaurants. The Hoxton with its speakeasy downstairs, Mediterranean restaurant on the main floor, and the Peruvian restaurant on the roof is a great place to hang out. Blind Barber where you go through a barber shop to get to its speakeasy vibes with DJs on the weekends. Pilsen has some of the best Mexican restaurants and taco spots. Wicker Park and Logan Square, with the urban hipster vibes, vintage stores, and amazing coffee shops. I’m also very much a “go with the flow” kind of guy, so depending on how we’re feeling, I know I can find something to go with the vibe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been fortunate enough to surround myself with people that have supported me on my creative journey. Companies that I’ve worked with, people that I have collabed with, the community on Instagram that hypes me up. There’s so many to say, but the two guys that I work with on practically a daily basis, whether its a phone call, text, or DM would be Travis Barron & Dayson Roa who are incredibly talented photographers and videographers.
