We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Sanborn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Richard, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
At first my entire life was consumed by my company. I felt like if I wasn’t grinding at it every second of every day I was wasting precious time that I would never get back. After a year or so of that mindset I felt it weighing on my every day life and my relationship with my now wife. I also came to the realization that I do much higher quality work when I’m rested and not stressing about the business every second of every day. I also have found the importance of short breaks throughout the day; without them I would feel burnt out at the end of the day… whenever I decided that was. I now believe it’s very important to set work/life boundaries for myself for my own health, mental and physical. I’ve found myself to be a happier, less-stressed, and more well-rounded person now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The two main aspects of Blue Goose Productions that I believe set us apart are 1. Our customer service and 2. Our flexibility as creatives. We are first and foremost guides through the creative process for our clients. Film production is a strange beast in the sense that, unless you are actively doing it and living it, it’s very difficult to explain to someone outside the industry how it works and why we do what we do. Our clients usually have never given a second thought to how the sausage is made, so we at BGP like to act as Sherpas, leading them through the strange world of shooting a television commercial or social media ad. By laying out specific schedules, or explaining how we’re going to pull off certain shots or effects, we break it down in an easy to understand manner so the client knows exactly what to expect on the shooting day. I believe that’s what makes our customer service a step above. We also never create “cookie-cutter” content. Every company is different; and as such each of our clients deserve specific content tailored to their specific needs. We’re very flexible in the sense that if our clients already have an idea of what they would like shot, that’s great! If our client have no idea what they want, that’s even better! We can work with any amount of creative input and turn around to hit them with great, emotion-inducing content.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Weather permitting, I’d definitely take them to shoot the ‘Hooch! Nothing beats a day floating down the river with friends and your favorite drinks. I’d also take them to Bartaco; it’s one of my wife and I’s favorite places. Speaking of great food, I’d take my friend to Argosy in East Atlanta Village, The Iberian Pig in Decatur, and Parker’s on Ponce if I’m feeling fancy. The Fox Theatre is an amazing spot to visit as well, I’ve seen a few shows there and it’s a beautiful place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my wife, Kate Sanborn. I was lucky enough to find myself a great partner who’s always believed in me. She works very hard in the film industry as well, as a costumer. Without her sacrifices and hours that she’s poured into her own career, Blue Goose Productions would have never happened. Anyone will tell you that starting a business is hard, but it would have been absolutely impossible for me to even attempt such a thing without Kate’s support through the times of feast and especially the times of famine for BGP.
