We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Grove and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Richard, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of our brand has probably been persistently trying to make marginal improvements year after year after year. The longer I’m in business the more I believe that there are no ‘overnight successes’ and the ones that are, took 10+ or 20+ years in the making. Success comes from the gradual compounding of small efforts and improvements over long periods of time. Just like money compounds slowly on the front end and then snowballs as time goes on, so do the efforts you put into your own business and brand.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My background is in engineering but my career today really got its start when I left my high paying and comfortable engineering job to come back and work for our family business. At the time, we had just started trying to grow a brand called Wall Control which is today the best selling metal pegboard storage system on the market. At the time it was me and a guy in the warehouse and I spent most my time learning how to bootstrap an ecommerce style product from scratch. From self taught SEO, web development, supply chain, vendor relations and so on, I taught myself as I went and ultimately scaled Wall Control to the brand name it is today. Today we have a great team in place that allows us to continue to grow and I could not do it without them.
My experience growing Wall Control and our similar house brands has given me a great vantage point and expertise I have found many small businesses and business owners trying to follow the same path find value in. For these reasons, I founded The Small Business Consultant as an outlet for me and my consulting team to help other business owners overcome obstacles who are on the same or similar path.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting for a week this time of year, there are few things I would definitely try to hit.
I really love the restaurant Novo in Dunwoody so we would definitely hit that up.
I like sports so we’d try to catch a Braves game and visit the Battery.
If we timed it right I would also want to take them to Mercedes Benz Stadium to catch a Falcons game.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my support network starting with my family. If I didn’t have the support and encouragement from my family to trust my gut and take some of the chances I have, I certainly would not be where I am today. In all aspects of the term, we are a family business and that takes a lot of trust, support, and compromise.
