We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Barman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Richard, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to follow a creative career because it lets me turn ideas into real, meaningful results while staying connected to my love for telling stories that matter. Creativity has always been a big part of how I see and interact with the world, and photography became the perfect way to capture and save moments that feel important and special.

A creative job isn’t just about making pictures, it’s about breaking limits, showing new ways of seeing things, and creating work that really touches people. It takes a mix of focus, flexibility, and a willingness to keep learning and growing. For me, this career isn’t just a job, it’s a part of who I am, a way to make a difference through work that has meaning and lasts.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is an exploration of life’s complexities, captured through the lens of my camera. I focus on documenting the world as I see it—real, unfiltered, and raw. What sets me apart is my commitment to capturing the entirety of the human experience, both the beautiful and the challenging aspects. I don’t just look for the moments that are conventionally beautiful or aesthetically perfect; I look for the truth in what is often overlooked. I believe that the most powerful stories are found in the mundane, the ordinary, and the imperfect. My goal is to showcase these moments in a way that encourages viewers to reflect on their own perspectives and to engage with the world more deeply.

What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to capture moments that might otherwise be lost. There’s something profound in the fleeting nature of life—whether it’s a subtle gesture, an unspoken emotion, or a quiet moment of connection. These are the moments that interest me, and it’s incredibly rewarding when I can capture them in a way that resonates with others. My photography is not just about creating beautiful images, but about telling stories that speak to something larger than the frame itself. It’s about making people pause, reflect, and see the world with a new perspective.

Reaching where I am today professionally hasn’t been easy. There were many challenges along the way—technical hurdles, self-doubt, and the constant push to improve. But through persistence and a willingness to learn, I’ve been able to overcome these obstacles. I’ve learned that growth takes time, and success isn’t just about talent; it’s about the determination to keep pushing forward even when things get tough. Every challenge I faced taught me something valuable, whether it was about refining my craft, embracing new techniques, or developing the resilience to keep moving forward.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying true to my vision. In the creative world, it’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing or to chase trends, but I’ve realized that the work that resonates most with people is the work that comes from a place of authenticity. My best work has always been when I’ve trusted my instincts and remained true to my own perspective, even if it wasn’t what others expected or wanted.

What I want the world to know about my work and my story is that it’s about more than just photography—it’s about capturing the essence of life, in all its forms. I want my work to inspire others to see beyond the surface, to reflect on the world with empathy, and to appreciate the complexities of our shared human experience. My brand is built on the idea of honest storytelling, and I want my photography to be a reminder that every moment, no matter how small or imperfect, has value. Through my lens, I aim to create work that speaks to the heart and encourages a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d plan a week-long itinerary that captures the diverse charm of Assam. We’d start with a visit to the Kamakhya Temple, an iconic spiritual site with rich historical significance. Then, we’d explore the lush tea gardens, where the peaceful environment and breathtaking views provide a perfect escape. A thrilling safari in Kaziranga National Park would follow, allowing us to witness the majestic one-horned rhino and other wildlife. Next, we’d visit Sualkuchi, a village known for its exquisite silk weaving, and spend time observing the craftsmanship. We’d also take a ferry to Umananda Island, the smallest inhabited river island in the world, for a scenic and tranquil experience. To wrap it up, we’d head to Fancy Bazaar, the city’s vibrant market, offering a blend of shopping, street food, and cultural experiences, where we can immerse ourselves in the region’s lively atmosphere and local traditions.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my father, Dwijen Barman, my mother, Kalyani Barman, and my big brother, Russell Barman. Their constant support, encouragement, and belief in me have been instrumental in my journey. My father’s wisdom and dedication, my mother’s unconditional love and confidence in my abilities, and my big brother’s relentless support and inspiration have shaped who I am today. Their influence has been a driving force behind my success, and I’m incredibly grateful for their guidance and unwavering belief in me.
