We had the good fortune of connecting with Reyvon Shemo, Nail Artist and Owner of 5ive12nails and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Reyvon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, after college I didn’t have a clear plan of what I wanted to do with my life. I had a few jobs but I never was able to settle into a position. I knew beauty was a billion dollar industry so I decided to indulge. Lashes was an absolute no-go, I didn’t enjoy doing hair so the next best thing was nails.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I got here by staying true to myself and working hard. I work so hard for my business, on and off work and I’m grateful to say that I enjoy what I do. It has never been easy being my own boss, having to pay to work, having slow work weeks, and dealing with different people everyday. But it has all been well worth it. At the end of the day I’m lucky to be here and have a talent that supports my life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay so first I would start at BarTaco because I love them, I do not care what anybody says they are great to me, we’d probably catch STK happy hour because why not. There’s always something going on in the city so whatever is happening this week we will be there. I recently was able to take my niece to a few museums while she was visiting so we’d probably stop by some of those, maybe the High Museum of Art and the Michael C. Carlos Museum for their ancient art collection.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Savannah State University made me, although I’m not using my degree the people I met and the lessons I’ve learned there molded me into the woman I am today. Every journey I’ve been on was necessary for me to get here. Also my mother, who always instilled in me to do something I’d be proud of and my grandmother who raised me in an artistic household.
