We had the good fortune of connecting with Renicka Carswell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renicka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started braiding hair as early as ten years old; practicing making a little $10-$15 every Friday doing my cousin’s braids. Hair for me at that time was just a skill I picked up following in my mother’s footsteps. A year After graduating High School, I enrolled in cosmetology school; thinking I was going to learn more about braiding. NOPE! I learned everything BUT braiding; however I had to see it through.
I completed the courses and state board at first attempt and became a master cosmetologist one year later.
I tried pursuing other career interests that lead me to the land of “NO WHERE” I was overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated; on top of having no flexibility. I was slaving for Pennies.
I decided in that moment that if I can work long hours for someone else; I will work 40hours for myself and I will never fire me!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I offer an all inclusive experience; a safe space where you leave confident, refilled, and humored. Every Client is intentionally.
I’m most proud of myself for stepping out of chasing braid trends and styles to finding my own lane.
Becoming a master cosmetologist early gave me a leg up in the industry; but it wasn’t enough. I learned that I needed to specialize in something; so I joined every hair group and I scoped the scene daily. I soon grew interest in locs and brow tinting.
For Years I practice different techniques and took classes; flying from state to state, spending thousands of dollars to gain as much knowledge and certifications that I can, to exceed the expectations of myself with the services I wanted to offer.
I had to see myself as the best but in order to do so I had to get out of my own way and dive deep into the complexity of the Loc industry utilizing everything I’ve learned over the years combined.
Creating, Repairing, and maintaining Locs became “my thing” But everything I do is Flawless!
Braids, Twist, Brow Tint, whatever you like; I do for you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Flying biscuit for breakfast, zip line downtown for daily activity, king claw seafood for dinner and “The Suite” for night life

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to first give honor to my father in heaven for shaping and molding me into the person I am today. Providing me the skills, knowledge, and opportunity to boost the confidence of his people. Big Shout to my Husband Kris Carswell for being my best friend, my accountability partner, my comfort, during and after cosmetology school. From the early morning wake up calls ensuring I wasn’t skipping class to supporting risky decisions; believing in me more than I sometimes believe in myself.
