We had the good fortune of connecting with Renauta Sailsman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renauta, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always been a lover of fashion, architecture, and styling since junior high. I would clip out pictures from magazines of homes, clothes, and interior design projects and make mood boards with my younger cousins when we were small. I would also bedazzle my Converse sneakers in High School even though I would be teased by other classmates since I wasn’t wearing the latest Jordans or Air Max’s. After I graduated college in 2012, I became a store visual merchandiser for brands like Ann Taylor, Topshop/Topman, Sabon, Forever 21, Patricia Fields, & Adidas. I have also modeled in the ballroom scene, “kiki scene” and various fashion shows throughout NYC which played a major role in my life personally and business wise. In 2016, I was gifted the book Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso. After reading that novel, I was more motivated than ever to begin my own shoe business. I am a big fan of shoes, I mean what girl isn’t am I right?! I started She To Her Shoetique LLC to provide various styles of heels, boots, flats and shoes for women of all shapes and sizes. What I am working on now is a thigh high collection that can fit us thick thigh women without the issue of them constantly falling down or us constantly pulling them up. They always say red lipstick can make any outfit pop, but to me, a killer pair of heels is what will make you command attention from any man and/or woman in the room. She To Her Shoetique LLC concept is to bring variouss styles of shoes and accessories from my POV to your closet!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I currently work for the Child Abuse & Neglect Division in Brooklyn, NY. I have a degree in Bachelor of Arts Forensic Psychology from CUNY John Jay College which has led me to this career choice. This job is DEFINITELY not easy, but what job is right?! I am a very empathetic person and I always do my best to help families and children in need because it can easily be any one of us in the same situations as these families. Obviously, this job has many obstacles and the Child Welfare system definitely still has some cleaning up to do to maintain that these children do suffer through anymore trauma whether its through the foster care system or through other relatives and/or family friends. There are a lot of late nights and very early mornings with this career and balancing it with my business is definitely challenging.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
