We had the good fortune of connecting with Rekiya “Iya” Overstreet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rekiya “Iya”, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea of Urban Woman Culture when I saw so many women wanting to connect without having a certain criteria to meet! An Urban Woman is a woman that is connected to her city and it is the culture that brings us together!

What should our readers know about your business?
Building the IYA Foundation, in which I provide youth services throughout Miami Dade County was a very difficult task being that I am from Cincinnati, Ohio. Although Urban Woman Culture gave me connections to the city, I had to gain trust and respect in order for my Youth Organization to grow! One lesson I learned is to never be scared to do things alone! I would like the world to know that Urban Woman Culture is a movement that will continue to uplift and take action to strengthen Urban Women and Communities! And as an Urban Woman it is my duty to Inspire Youth Advancement, The IYA Way!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta? – I would take them to a park, maybe to Gocha’s for lunch, Hillside Bookstore shopping at Alpharetta’s Avalon & Bones for dinner!

Miami Beach- Yoga Modo Yoga Miami Beach, Brunch at Little Hen, The Miami Beach Botanical garden, Sunday at 10:30 Miami Beach Community Church where I coordinate the Youth Organization
Dinner at Prime, Bar One or Papi Steak.

Joe’s Crabshack South Beach for the Fried Chicken, walk the beach towards South Point Park, eat & people watch! Wynwood on a Friday or Saturday night and Little Havana on a Friday for some Cuban food ice cream and antique cigar shops!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to Urban Women all over the world! May you continue to self care, live in your truth & connect with women of all cultures!
