We had the good fortune of connecting with Redonkulous Entertainment and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Redonkulous, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
QUESTION 1: What was your thought process behind starting your own business?
CO-FOUNDER: We always wanted to make Comic books
FIRST LADY: This was always collectively our dream. From the time Kevin and Var were kids in elementary school, they always had aspirations of creating and publishing their own comic books, with their own characters, stories, and universe. I met these guys in Junior High, and this was all they talked about, even then. We all stayed tight knit over the years, and by the time we became adults, it just made sense to stop talking about the dream, and actually take the necessary steps to make it happen. With this being my tribe, I was committed to help out in any way possible to make their dreams a reality.
COOL BREEZE: My thought process was that I wanted everyone to see and to know what we had created. The art that we put forth and the fiery creativity that God has given me, needed to not only be with me- but shared with the world. And combined with the rest of the members of R.E., we present something that is simply fantastic and inspiring. I want everyone to know who we are. And I knew that we were talented enough to compete with the old and become one of the leaders of the new.
QUESTION 2: What’s one thing about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
CO-FOUNDER: Just how much of childhood friends we are, and all that good stuff.
FIRST LADY: That being Redonkulous NEVER STOPS! It’s a constant grind, a constant hustle to do what we do. Being in the entertainment business is not for the faint of heart. It’s never a 9-5, type of deal. It’s answering emails and interview requests at 1am; it’s editing stories for our next comic book; it’s waking up in the morning with a great idea about how to further business, and you just gotta call your business partners and tell them. Even though it’s 7am, and they are more than likely still sleep. Or maybe not, for that matter…lol
COOL BREEZE: Well one thing that outsiders are unaware of about Redonkulous Entertainment is how truly competitive we are. I mean the competition is not only with others out there doing the same thing as we do, but the competition I speak of dwells within us. We criticize each others work extremely hard to the point that feelings may gets involved. Lol. But it helps us collectively grow more advanced in what we each individually do.
QUESTION 3: How do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?
CO-FOUNDER: For me, I have a saying: “All you gotta do is jump.” So we always tend to jump head first, not knowing anything about making a comic book or where this comic book would take us.
FIRST LADY: Sometimes you just gotta JUMP! We didn’t know anything about how to physically make a comic or start an official company. We didn’t know anything about how to start a clothing line. Hell, we didn’t know anything about how to create, direct, and edit a MOVIE!! But we did just that. I believe that you have to have the mindset of “I dont know how to right now, but I’m gonna find out. And not only that, but I’m gonna master it to the best of my ability.” That’s who we are!
COOL BREEZE: About risk taking I’ll say that it is an important factor in my life. How would I know if I never tried or gave something a shot? I mean its really the opposite of fear. Without risk taking people may lose out on opportunities in life.
QUESTION 4: Other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
CO-FOUNDER: Its all about the comics- so for me, it would be when we decided to come out with M.A.V.E.N Bloodmoon #1, as our first issue.
FIRST LADY: The concept that we’re gonna take over the world. That’s a mindset. That’s a lifestyle. That means that nothing (and I mean NOTHING!) is off the table. The beauty of what we do is that even though all things are possible through comics, we’re not limited to just that. We are in a very unique space, where we can branch out to so many other different fields, all with the same brand: REDONKULOUS!
COOL BREEZE: The single most important decision I made was to never give up- despite whatever comes along that may be a stumbling block. With that, I learned to find the good out of any situation and use that to my advantage. In my latest scenario I applied this and kept writing and writing, and developed tons of the material for Redonkulous.
QUESTION 5: What was the most important factor behind your success/ the success of your brand?
CO-FOUNDER: Unity. We work as a unit and believe in each other
FIRST LADY: With us, always expect the unexpected! You never know what we’re gonna get into next. People often tell us that they see our brand everywhere, and that we’re always doing something. It’s that unpredictability that I think has gotten us to where we are now. Just when you thought that comics books were the only thing we do, then it’s like, “Oh look, they’ve put out their own clothing brand.” Just when you thought that was it, then it’s like, “Wait a min, they have their logo on cups, plates, and accessories, too?” Then, if THAT wasnt enough, “They hold events, and have created/produced/directed their own movie?” I love how we keep people guessing!
COOL BREEZE: The most important factor behind our success applies to all of us collectively and individually. Its our drive and ambition. It’s our creativity and loyalty. The strength to endure and to hold each other up. Its simply iron sharpens iron, but we are titanium!
QUESTION 6: What’s the most difficult decision you ever had to make?
CO-FOUNDER: From a editing point of view, the cuts we have to make when it comes to scripts for our both comic books and movies
FIRST LADY: When you have 8 decison makers, everything’s a difficult decision…lol. From deciding who to employ for certain projects, or even when trying to switch gears to doing a more serious event, versus some of the more joyful ones we’ve done- and still find a way to make it entertaining. If you’ve been following us for a while, and you’re using to seeing our more comical side, then our movie, “Road To Reminiscence,” would really throw you for a loop. We had the difficult task of talking about death, and turning our grief into a story of redemption and inspiration- while still keeping audiences tuned in and engaged. That’s some complex territory to navigate, but nonetheless raw and real. And that’s what’s most important.
COOL BREEZE: The most difficult decision I had to make was actually forced upon me. The decision to be satisfied and to accept not being there with Redonkulous physically for a very long time, and to be a part of everything distantly. It was due to an unfortunate circumstance but thank God I made it through.
QUESTION 7: Work life balance: How has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance?
CO-FOUNDER: I’m the balance master. I always had a strong sense of balance.
FIRST LADY: For me, personally, work-life balance is something I’ve always struggled with. I’m getting better, but the more popular we become, the more our workload increases, the crazier things get. I’ve found that its important for me to take time ever so often to breathe, and evaluate. I have to ask myself, “What steps can I put in place to be more productive with my time.” Sometimes that may mean setting some boundaries. Putting my phone on “Do Not Disturb” so I can grind for an hour or two to knock out my to-do list, so that I can have family time later. And sleep. The proper amount of rest, without distraction is life-changing!
COOL BREEZE: Well the balance is what it is. Life then business. Life then business. Always take care of you and what you need to do in life. It’s part of proper planning. With that business is included within.
QUESTION 8: Do you have a favorite quote/affirmation? What does it mean to you? What do you like about it?
CO-FOUNDER: Ok favorite quote for me is “The journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step.” That speaks volume for me because I believe in just doing that. And it takes that first step.
FIRST LADY: “Pretty Girl, You Can Do Hard Things.” That’s what I tell myself whenever I get overwhelmed or stressed. Fortunately, I have the ability to sit quiet, dig deep, shift into my second, third, or even eigth gear- figure it out and keep moving forward.
COOL BREEZE: I stand on Mark 11:22-24. It states “Have faith in God. For verily I say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to past; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore i say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” It’s all about faith and believing.
QUESTION 9: Why did you pursue and artistic/creative career?
CO-FOUNDER: Again, since me and Cool Breeze were 10 years old, we’ve always wanted to make a comic book
FIRST LADY: At the core of who Redonkulous Entertainment is, we’re artists. The beauty of being an artist is that art is so extremely vast. We take the same approach that we would use to make comic books, and employ that to put on different events- and even to create an emotional rollercoaster of a movie. We’re a team of 8 people who are just creative by nature, and I think that shines through in every project that we do.
COOL BREEZE: I pursued an artistic creative career because I have a fiery passion of creativity dwelling within me and I want the world to see and enjoy what we have to offer.
QUESTION 10: What do you want your legacy to be? What do you want people to remember about you?
CO-FOUNDER: I want my legacy to be that Redonkulous Entertainment took over the world. And I’m 1/8 owner and a Co-Founder of this business that took over the world
FIRST LADY: I want people to remember us as an example of what’s possible when you stick together. There’s so many people in competition with one another, employing a kind of “crabs in a barrel” type mentality. It hasnt always been easy, and there have been plenty of bumps along the way, but when you’re all motivated by a singular goal, and you have the right work ethic, anything is possible. In short, Anyone Can Be Redonkulous…
COOL BREEZE: I want Redonkulous Entertainment to be the top of the food chain. To one day be even BIGGER than Marvel and DC. I want the people to remember me as one who’s life story is inspiration for all, as a person who made his way up from tremendous struggle- to a life of tremendous success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets us apart from our contemporaries is that we’re BIG AND IN YOUR FACE! That carries over with everything we do. From comic book art, to our table and event display, even to just the way that we carry ourselves. When you meet us for the first time, you’ll always remember the positive energy that we exude, which tends to bring people back every times. In terms of getting to where we are today, its really because of just always thinking bigger….”How can we set the bar even HIGHER for ourselves.” “What can we possibly do to top the last event we had.” The more we learn, the more we grow and apply that knowledge to the next project.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to dedicate this to our parents, who have played such an enormous role in each of our upbringing, as well as our respective families, and of course, our fans, otherwise known as “The Redonkulous Revolution”
