We had the good fortune of connecting with Rashida Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rashida, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I created Well Black Mom, I wanted it to be a source of inspiration & empowerment for moms like me who made the choice to prioritize their well-being.
I wanted to create a safe space online to discuss motherhood – the good & the bad. A safe space to honor our stories because although we share a common experience, the beauty lies in each mother’s testimony.
I recently decided to focus on supporting single & separated moms who are struggling with the stress of co-parenting. My intention is to guide them on the path to finding calm in their chaos.
As a co-parent of 6 years, I realized there was purpose in my pain. I want other co-parenting moms to understand that they can reclaim their power & their peace even in the midst of a storm.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business truly began when I made the choice to use my voice & share my story. I struggled quite a bit when I gave birth to my daughter & became a new & first-time mom. I suffered from postpartum depression & a rapidly deteriorating relationship. It became too much for me to handle & I soon began to crumble & lose myself.
My guilt & my shame kept me from speaking up, asking for help & taking care of myself in the way that I needed & deserved.
I realized that at the rate that I was going, I was soon to become a shell of my former self. That’s when I developed the resolve to change my life for the better & take back my power.
I started documenting my wellness journey on social media. When I saw that others were inspired & encouraged, I knew that there was a purpose for everything that I had gone through.
I decided to become an Emotional Wellness Coach for single & separated moms who are navigating a co-parenting relationship. While the decision was easy, the marketing was not. Marketing meant I needed to use my voice, to reveal my story. And it was scary.
What I learned is that my story didn’t have to be perfect or packaged in a certain way…it was perfect because it was mine. Because it was raw. Because I didn’t hold back. And the more I shared, the more I connected with other moms.
The number one thing I want my clients & potential clients to know is that our power is in our ability to control ourselves – our emotions & the reactions that come with them.
This is why I teach emotional wellness. I believe it is the foundation for the peace that we seek. And that peace can only come from within. It starts & ends with us.
My life is full of peace. My intention is to help my clients achieve the same – despite obstacles.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh wow, there’s really so much to choose from! While I stay in my suburb most of the time, I would make the sacrifice to venture out a little bit LOL.
I’m pretty active so we would need to take a trip to Stone Mountain & hike to the summit. The view is absolutely beautiful & gives you a different perspective on things (quite literally).
If it’s a Friday, we’d for sure head to Downtown Duluth. It’s a cute area to walk around – there’s food (of course), drinks & music. Fridays ‘n’ Duluth is a highlight during the summer for outdoor vibes & entertainment. Nacho Daddy’s margaritas are fantastic BTW.
At some point, we’d have to hit up The Battery. There’s something for everyone here. Walking around & people watching are top tier.
And of course, I can’t forget Ponce City Rooftop. It’s like a carnival for adults. And there are drinks. And a DJ. Check out the cityscape while you’re hanging out or indulge in a little Cupid Shuffle. Or both. No judgment.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout goes to my mom, who raised me on her own…who to this day is the example of resilience & compassion that I strive to embody every single day.
