We had the good fortune of connecting with Rashad Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rashad, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Determination and disciplined helped me to succeed. Being determined allowed me to become hundred percent committed to being a self published author and discipline allow me to develop a passion for writing relatable children books for urban youth.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Rashad Patterson is an Atlanta based youth development professional, teaching and mentoring kids on the importance of S.T.E.A.M. while helping them develop soft skills like leadership, problem solving, and conflict resolution. He has taken his experience mentoring youth and turned that into a series of children’s books that touch on topics involving colorism, abandonment, and racial profiling. A refreshing deviation from many children’s books that shy away from some of the very topics young people are experiencing, these books serve as a blueprint for parents to introduce their children to complex ideas in a relatable way.In addition to authoring his series of children’s books Rashad works closely with movement leaders and civic partners. Through book giveaways, distribution of school supplies to metro Atlanta students, and free holiday gift cards to single moms, Rashad continues to be an active part of his community.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A tour of the S.W.AT.S. AKA Southwest Atlanta ,Lennox Mall, Big Daddy’s Soul Food on Cascade Rd, South City Kitchen, High Museum of Art , Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Perimeter Mall,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
He has also partnered with the organization, Engineering for Kids, where he introduces students to the six stages of the engineering design process while executing projects based off the lessons. Here, Rashad incorporates his sociology and tech background teaching kids the importance of S.T.E.A.M. while having discussions around life choices, integrity, and preparing them for a brighter future.
