We had the good fortune of connecting with Raphael Bahindwa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raphael, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the important factor about my success, Is the fact that I’m always trying my best to stay consistent and focused on what I’m working on, or anything that I’m doing in life. It’s also important to have the support, and the positive energy from the people around you.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artwork reflects the current events in my homeland, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As a Congolese citizen living in America, I aim to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles in my country through my mixed media paintings. My preferred technique involves layering acrylic on canvas and then using oil paints on top. Currently, I’m developing a unique abstract style incorporating fluorescent colors against a dark backdrop, along with symbolic Congolese artifacts like traditional masks and warrior arrows. I draw inspiration from these elements to express the turmoil in the Congo visually. My art is intended for everyone, particularly those interested in learning about the DRC and the prevalent issue of child labor in a country rich in mineral resources.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As an artist, I have a deep appreciation for museums, galleries, and art shows. In my view, they offer unparalleled insight into the culture of a place, making them indispensable destinations.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe my gratitude to my incredible family, especially my high school teacher, Ms. Robyn Hayes Wilms, as well as my supportive friends, professors at SCAD, and my own perseverance that never wavered.
