We had the good fortune of connecting with Raelynn Janicke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raelynn, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
The thing that makes me happier than anything else on this planet is being able to help people. Whether it’s listening to a friend or having a client tell me I reinvigorated their love for a project, it brings me so much joy that I can bring comfort and happiness to another human being. I think it’s a combo of how I was raised and also just inherently who I am. That’s the best part of me being able to play both roles of studio manager and mastering engineer for Infrasonic. I have a perfect balance of being able to help our clients with their projects both on the administrative side and on the creative side. I can’t imagine a better outlet for my creativity and love for working with people than where I am now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I couldn’t imagine a better career choice for me than being a mastering engineer. I’ve been musically inclined my entire life and having that paired with a problem-solving oriented brain has served me so well in this position.

I didn’t even know being an audio engineer was a viable career option until my a cappella group tracked their EP when I was in college. I somehow ended up assisting the tracking engineer on that project and fell in love with the entire process. I was originally enrolled in the computer science program, but quickly pivoted to the audio program and graduated with an abundance of excitement to get started in the industry. After graduating, I briefly interned for Soundtrack Boston before making my move to Nashville. A week after I moved to Nashville, I met my mentor Tommy Wiggins. After spending some time trying to find the right path for me in the audio industry, he encouraged me to start mastering and 3 years later I ended up joining the Infrasonic Mastering team working for Pete Lyman. I met Pete through a mutual friend and he asked me to come on as both the studio manager and a mastering engineer. I feel insanely lucky for the way things worked out, but I also know it wouldn’t have happened if it I didn’t hustle so hard to make it happen for myself. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that attitude is everything. Anyone can be taught anything, but personality and drive can’t be taught. I feel like having such a passion for working with others has also been incredibly beneficial in my journey through the industry.

Now that I’m at Infrasonic, I feel like my creative abilities in mastering have increased exponentially. Having a team of engineers to bounce ideas off of has been incredibly helpful for me to try things I wouldn’t necessarily be drawn to do and has helped me build my confidence in my craft. The biggest thing I want to convey, for both myself and for our company, is that the root of what we do is in helping people. We feel so lucky that we get to spend every day working with a vast range of clients and bringing their projects to the next level. No matter what level the client is at or what their budget is, we just truly want to use our passion to help as many artists as we can.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Bar wise, Nashville has a KILLER scene. Some of my favorites are The Fox, Attaboy, and Old Glory. If we’re talking killer cocktails AND food, Mother’s Ruin and Barcelona are home base for me. I actually bartended at Barcelona for 5 years and even though I don’t work there anymore, I’m still there just as much. That job gave me a lot of my closest friends in Nashville and was also ultimately how I met Pete funny enough.

Activity wise, Radnor Lake is my favorite place in all of Nashville. Radnor has always been a really centering place for me in my life and it’s got options for either a chill walking vibe or hoofing it up into the woods. The Parthenon is super dope too. There’s a pretty killer art museum inside of it too, but just being outside and looking at how massive it is while you throw around a frisbee in the grass is awesome.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today without my first mentor Tommy Wiggins and my current mentor/boss Pete Lyman. Tommy basically put me on the mastering path and taught me everything he knew and now I get to work with Pete every day, who I looked up to for years before joining his company. I feel insanely lucky to have these two mentors in my life.
