We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Driscoll and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rae, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
One of the key habits that has helped me succeed is consistent practice. I believe that the more I work on my techniques, the more confident and skilled I become. Experimentation is another crucial aspect; I love pushing my boundaries by trying out new colors and styles, which really fuels my creativity. I find inspiration everywhere—whether it’s following other artists on social media, or even just exploring different forms of art.
Attention to detail is something I prioritize as well; the small nuances in blending and placement can elevate a look dramatically. I also reflect on my work regularly and seek feedback, as this helps me learn and grow. Staying organized with my tools and products is essential, too; it allows me to focus more on the creative process rather than getting bogged down by clutter. Finally, I embrace a growth mindset, which helps me view challenges as opportunities to improve rather than setbacks. All of these habits combine to create a solid foundation for my creative journey in makeup artistry.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a blend of imagination, skill, and passion. I aim to create looks that feel like stepping into another world, whether it’s through neon accents that glow in the dark or intricate floral designs that bring color and life to the face. What sets my work apart is my dedication to pushing creative boundaries, turning my face into a canvas where I can showcase new techniques, textures, and inspirations.
I’m most proud of the evolution of my style since I began this journey in 2016 during the height of the makeup craze. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a full-fledged passion. It wasn’t always easy—like many artists, I faced moments of self-doubt and creative blocks. But with every challenge, I pushed myself to experiment and learn. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of patience and the power of practice. Staying consistent and allowing myself to grow over time is what has allowed my art to flourish.
Today, I want my work to inspire others to embrace their creativity without limits. Makeup is more than just cosmetics to me; it’s a way of storytelling and expressing emotions that words often can’t capture. I hope that through my art, people feel inspired to see beauty in unexpected places and dare to be bold. My journey is about finding joy in the process and sharing that joy with the world, one look at a time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1: Welcome & Relaxed Vibes
To ease them into the Southern vibe, we’d start with brunch at The Flying Biscuit Cafe in Midtown, known for its famous biscuits and grits. In the afternoon, we’d head to Jeju Sauna in Duluth for a little pampering—think saunas, pools, and massages to unwind after traveling. For dinner, we’d go to 9 Mile Station, a rooftop beer garden at Ponce City Market, where we can enjoy good food, drinks, and one of the best views of the Atlanta skyline as the sun sets.
Day 2: Art, Culture, and Creativity
Today is all about exploring Atlanta’s art and history. We’d start at the High Museum of Art, where they have everything from modern art to classic pieces. After that, we’d head to Krog Street Market for a lunch break, sampling the amazing food stalls with everything from tacos to oysters. In the afternoon, we’d check out the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail to take in some of the city’s best street art. For dinner, The Sound Table on Edgewood Avenue has a laid-back vibe and often hosts DJs or live music, giving us a taste of the local creative scene.
Day 3: Day Trip to Nature
Time for a day trip! We’d drive out to Amicalola Falls State Park (my favorite place!) to enjoy a hike with stunning waterfall views. We’d bring a picnic to enjoy at the park and take in the natural beauty of North Georgia. On the way back, we’d stop at Dahlonega for a wine tasting at Wolf Mountain Vineyards, where they have amazing mountain views and local wines.
Day 4: Shopping and Street Art
Back in the city, we’d start our day at Ponce City Market to explore its unique shops and boutiques. From vintage finds to local artisan goods, there’s something for everyone. For lunch, we’d grab some food at Bell Street Burritos in the market. In the afternoon, we’d hit up the Little Five Points neighborhood, Atlanta’s hub for quirky shops, record stores, and cool street art. It’s a perfect area for exploring and capturing some great photos. For dinner, we’d head to Ecco in Midtown for some delicious Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
Day 5: Beach Day at Lake Lanier
Since there’s no beach in Atlanta, we’d take a short drive to Lake Lanier for a relaxing day by the water. We’d rent paddleboards or just hang out by the lake, soaking up the sun. If we’re feeling adventurous, we could try zip-lining or even rent a boat for the afternoon. To end the day, we’d head back to Atlanta and grab dinner at Gunshow in Glenwood Park, where the chef’s table-style dining lets us sample a variety of incredible dishes.
Day 6: Foodie Tour
Today’s all about tasting Atlanta’s best flavors! We’d start with coffee and pastries at Spiller Park Coffee in Ponce City Market, then explore a few iconic food stops. For lunch, The Varsity is a must for a true Atlanta experience—nothing says Atlanta quite like a classic chili dog and frosted orange! In the afternoon, we’d head to Sweet Auburn Curb Market to sample some local treats and unique bites. For dinner, we’d go all out at Staplehouse, a local favorite known for its innovative seasonal menu and warm atmosphere.
Day 7: Farewell with a Chill Day
On the last day, we’d keep it low-key with a morning yoga class at Piedmont Park. Afterward, we’d have brunch at South City Kitchen in Midtown for a modern twist on Southern comfort food. We’d spend the afternoon strolling through the Atlanta Botanical Garden, taking in the gorgeous flowers and sculptures. Before heading to the airport, we’d make one final stop at Cafe Intermezzo for a dessert and coffee send-off, reminiscing about the incredible week we shared.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely! I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my fellow artists who have played a pivotal role in my journey. One specific artist stands out—Sarina Nexie. She creates intricate art, but uses her face as her canvas. Since the very beginning of my makeup journey, I have been trying to recreate her art. She has challenged and me to be a better artist through her own artwork, while also encouraging me to continue on my makeup journey.
Additionally, I want to recognize the vibrant community of makeup artists I’m a part of. We uplift each other through collaboration, feedback, and shared experiences, and that support has been invaluable. I also owe a huge thanks to online resources that have expanded my knowledge and inspired my creativity. It’s truly a collective effort, and I’m grateful for everyone who has contributed to my growth along the way!
