We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks has become a norm for me. Healthy risks of course. One of the quotes that I live by is, “if it doesn’t work out, it’s not because I didn’t try.” The mystery of not trying at all is worst than trying and failing. Taking risks has played a major role in my life and career. I take risks all the time. Of course, I pray about it first, then if I feel God is leading me to move forward, I do it, no matter how risky or unattainable it may seem. One risk that I consistently take is being a transparent voice for others to be healed. During my coaching sessions and motivational speaking, I allow myself to be vulnerable and honest with my audience. This isn’t always easy, because it can bring fear of what people may think. In my 20-plus years of coaching and mentorship, taking the risk of being transparent has been beneficial in the lives of my clients/audience. I have also taken risks that have not worked out in my favor, but again, at least I tried and I don’t have any thoughts of “what if” or “what more could I have done/said.”

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the founder and executive director of Girl Talk International and a certified Life Coach. Girl Talk International (GTI) is a nonprofit organization that empowers and inspires women from all walks of life, who may have been victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and other life-traumatic experiences to help them recover, heal, and redevelop their self-worth and self-esteem. Girl Talk also provides women and girls with the opportunity to come together and strengthen each other through personal experiences; ultimately helping one another to rebuild and cope with the many issues that tend to affect us, such as self-worth deficiencies. Our goal is to be instrumental in the healing of past wounds and the restoration of the spirit. I have made it my mission to push all to pursue life and discover their divine purpose. I am constantly igniting the fire and strengthening the inner soul of all to fight through life’s obstacles and finish with an expected victory. I am driven by my passion to make a better people today, in hopes of making a better world for tomorrow. What sets me apart from others is that I am able to be my true, authentic self. I often tell the women that are a part of GTI or that I personally life coach, “no one can beat you being you.” That is a statement that I live by. When you are being yourself and walking in your purpose that automatically places you in a category all by yourself.

I am most excited about seeing lives changed. In this field of work, it is most rewarding to know that the tools I provide people are being applied and therefore producing results. I am excited to be able to see how individuals regain hope, power, and live out their dreams.

I am where I am today by faith. Years ago, I was seeking the Lord for something I could do to help women because I know personally what women and girls go through. One night we were having nights of prayer at my church and I knew that God was leading me to start Girl Talk International. We have been going strong for 13 years and I am so honored to be able to give back in this way.

My journey starting Girl Talk International has been far from easy. There have been major highs and lows along the way. One low that we experienced was having people that visited the organization, leave and start their own organization with the same name. This was devastating at first because GTI is like a baby to me and for someone to go and replicate it without my permission was disheartening. God comforted me by reminding me that I have something worth replicating. Major luxury brands have people who replicate their brands because there is a high demand for it. These types of challenges reassured me that GTI is indeed special.

I want the world to know that there is help available to you. God has placed ideas, businesses, organizations, etc inside of people to provide resources for you to become the best version of yourself. If you are a woman or girl, I want you to know that you are not alone and Girl Talk International is always open for you to talk through anything you may be facing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to have good clean fun. I also love showing southern hospitality to any visiting guests I have. If I had a best friend visiting the area and wanted to show them the best time ever I would start off with breakfast. I love breakfast and I know several delicious breakfast restaurants in the area. After breakfast, I would set up some fun activities for us to do. I would highly recommend getting a massage, pedicure, going shopping, painting, bowling, etc. Next, it would be time to grab a bite to eat. I would aim to take my friend to a place that she may have never been to. Here in North Carolina, there are some great sites to view that I would love to show my friend while she is visiting. Including; museums, zoos, beaches, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my husband, Pastor Ronald Wilson. We have been married for 26 years and he has not only been a supportive husband but also a coach and mentor on my journey. I am grateful to have a partner that is not only there to walk along with me but, God has literally used him to teach me and prepare me for my purpose.
