We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachael Langley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachael, what inspires you?
I am inspired by photos that make you feel something. Personally, I feel something anytime I see an image of a mother and her children. I look at it and feel as if I am connected to the mother in that photo. It’s amazing how I always get an overwhelming amount of emotion towards my own children while looking at somebody else’s artwork. When I see an image of a little boy playing with his mom’s hair, I immediately think about my son doing that same thing. I think about how it seems so small, but one day I’ll miss it. Any nursing photo makes me tear up with thoughts of my daughter. While it seems like I’ll be nursing forever, I know it’ll come to and end and I’ll miss that time together. Because I am inspired by these images, I tell my clients to do whatever comes naturally when loving on one another. Not every image needs to be “picture perfect” because the images that make you feeling something won’t be planned.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a storytelling photographer, so I let go of perfection and capture the meaningful moments you’ll miss. When I started my photography business, I didn’t even know what a storytelling photographer was. I thought every image needed to be posed and smiling at the camera. I always felt so much pressure going into sessions- “Do I remember all the poses?” Then I had my children and my perspective changed. I wanted pictures of them just as they are.. I could care less if they’re smiling straight at me with my camera in hand. I love when you hire me to shoot your family in an authentic way. I’ll be capturing beautiful images regardless, but you and your entire family will be less stressed if you’re allowing your children to play, get dirty and be themselves! During our sessions, I want you to let me into your world for an hour. I’m moving further and further away from posed portraits because by the end of the session, the kids are over it. If you let them play, the session is enjoyable for them. It’ll be a positive memory for you and your whole family to look back at.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many great places in Atlanta! My absolute favorite restaurant is Two Urban Licks. All the way from their drinks to salmon chips and duck! Activity wise, it’s always a great time to go to the Battery at Truist Park. There are plenty of places to walk around, bars, restaurants, and concerts. If you’re lucky, you can catch a Braves game while you’re there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a huge shoutout to my husband Cameron for always supporting me and my photography business. First, he 100% believed in me when I chose to leave my teaching career behind to become a full time photographer. Now that I’m busy, he makes sure that I have time to get my work done in the midst of all the chaos. It’s hard not having specific work hours because you find your work time overflowing into your family time. My children don’t deserve to have a mom who is always too busy to give them attention. Therefore, my husband always swoops in to save the day. All thanks to him, I’m able to get more done during the day without feeling that mama guilt. Overall, I couldn’t run a successful business without him.
