We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachael Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachael, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I grew up with cats and have always loved them. Every cat lover knows how much they clean themselves, and pretty frequently, they’ll put their leg straight up in the air. My cat Melvin was about 3 years old when I took a photo of him that eventually became the first “Straight Up Cat Leg” photo and the concept was born (September 2013). I was originally going to start a blog, but Instagram was becoming more popular so I started an account on that platform in December 2015.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The original goal of Straight Up Cat Leg was to post one funny cat photo a day in hopes that it would make someone laugh or smile. There are a lot of accounts dedicated to cats, but I try to post every photo I receive. If the leg isn’t totally straight up, or it’s not too funny, I’ll put it in the story instead.
I’ve submitted what I thought was a great photo of my cat and my nephew-cat to an account — they didn’t respond, it wasn’t posted and I was kind of let down.
I try to respond to all messages, interact with other people who love cats, and find a way to share everyone’s photos.
So many people have sent me messages saying that my posts make their day, so I feel like what I’ve created is pretty special.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Places to eat: Hell Yeah Gluten Free (I’m a huge fan of their vegan offerings)
Slutty Vegan
Life Bistro
Places to grab a drink:
Sweetwater
Monday Night Garage
Wild Heaven West End
Kombucha at Cultured South Taproom
Places to visit/things to do:
West Side/West End Trail
Java Cats

Considering I just went “out” for the first time Saturday for the first time in over a year, I’m sure I’m forgetting some places!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Straight Up Cat Leg wouldn’t be as popular as it is without our lovely little online cat community. I owe a huge thanks to anyone who has sent in a photo. And of course, the cats deserve a shoutout as well!
