We had the good fortune of connecting with R Dotta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi R, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
If I were to ask your name you’d be able to tell me without hesitation because you’ve been called that since your birth, everyday. If I were to call you something else, you wouldn’t respond because it doesn’t resonate with you, It’s not meant for you. Any gift you have, that’s personal to you. No one had to tell you what your gift is, you know what it is more than you know your name. So don’t ever give up, but there may come a time you need to modify your approach. As a recording artist, there may be a time that I need to change strategy from being the artist in the spotlight, to being the co-writer, the producer, or the executive producer.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music. My music to me is my heartbeat, my breath, my mind. You get all of me in my music and that’s the separation. I’m very intentional about what I say and how I say it, what beats I need for the project, how to sequence the project, how to market. I just love the whole process, from the writing to execution of it all. Over the years I’ve been proud of the acceptance I’ve been getting. It’s beyond anything I’ve imagined, the impact you have on people’s life. I got here professionally first through the grace of God. No matter how much knowledge I gained I’d pray and ask for Him to guide me where I needed to go and how to move. Other than that, I’m really active on Youtube University, learning about different strategies on marketing and promotion. Before I dropped out of college, I made sure I took a couple classes in marketing my last semester. It wasn’t easy, you have to fully accept who you are for yourself and trust God in this process. You’re gonna lose money, friends and your mind at times, but faith has to stick with you do you don’t lose your dreams. I’ve learned that I cannot do this alone. You need people you can trust in your corner. On the flip-side of that, if you feel you cannot trust them, go with your instinct. With my brand and I , we are one. This is natural, God given, I am who I am.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m typically not the type to go out, but I always know where to go if that makes sense. Right now, Posh is pretty poppin with DJ SCrib keeping the party going. Good food, good drinks all good vibes. But I’m the type to bring the party to me, hop on the grill, buy some bottles and call everyone over and EVERYONE will show up.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
