We had the good fortune of connecting with Quincy James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Quincy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There really wasn’t a thought process at all. Before last September, I had never taken a photo with a professional camera. I lost my little brother and went into a depression. My son, who was home from college, gave me his camera before going back to school, in an attempt to lift my spirits. I eventually started to play around with it. I became more and more intrigued by it. Then I started taking pictures using my kids as subjects. I started posting them on social media. The response was extremely positive. I was then asked to do a photoshoot. At that moment, the light bulb went off. I sat down and came up with a plan, and launched my business. Every piece of work is dedicated to my little brother, and I credit my loving son for the conception of my business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would describe my work as “me”. I’m known for being different, and unique. So it’s natural that my work would mirror my personality. I really strive to hold the integrity of my images. For instance, if I take a portrait, I want someone to look like themselves, see and appreciate their beauty. No two subjects are exactly alike. It’s our unique differences that makes us each beautiful in our own way. So I am very careful in my post production to hold the integrity of the image. I’m proud of myself because I was able to lift myself from depression and engage in art, which is something that makes me happy.
Learning to produce high quality images with less and less expensive equipment than most was a major challenge.
I’ve learned through trial and error. Those errors is what helped me grow the most.
I want the world to know and sense my ability to see the world at a different angle. There is beauty all around us, we often overlook it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The area I live in is most often associated with beaches. So I’m sure a trip to our beaches would be included. I would also take them to a place that includes an amusement park, shopping, etc. Or a visit to Top Golf. The night cap would include one of our remember rooftop restaurants downtown.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well, after getting started, my mind always brought me to a friend of mine and fellow photographer. Years ago, we crossed professional paths. He as a photographer, and myself as the leader of a jazz band. We shared the stage several times. I then hired him to do a photoshoot for my band. His creativity was breathtaking! It was original! His work inspires me to this day. I often reach out to him for advice as well. He has been a tremendous positive influence.
