We had the good fortune of connecting with Qing Lei and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Qing, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
My name is Qing Lei. I come from Guangdong Province, a small city in the south of China. Currently, I am a graphic and UI&UX designer. I think the biggest thing that helps me succeed is that I force myself to try new things. The visual design needs to create diversity and possibilities. I once indulged in my aesthetics and hobbies for a period of time, resulting in very similar designs style, even in color, font selection, typesetting, and pattern design. This is very distressing to me, because it makes me feel that I have not made progress and stagnated, so I began to look for new design tools and methods. I started to contact different fields, such as 3D design, to explore the possibilities of different visual designs. At the same time, it gives me a headache and anxiety. I needed to consult dozens of teaching videos or websites to make the most common menu bar. Of course, the results of these difficulties are relatively ideal. I was almost self-taught without any guidance, and I have accumulated a lot of knowledge of programming languages, which can be applied to my interaction design to a certain extent.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the process of my master’s education, I completed a large number of courses on cutting-edge design trends and best practices. In order not to limit myself, I explored different fields. Focusing on visual design, I have developed strong skills in design research, analysis, typesetting, layout design, brand logo design, user interface/user experience, interactive network design, sports media design, etc. Therefore, I have trained myself as a leader, team player, and designer. The research on SCAD has given me a deeper understanding of visual communication design. Designers can obtain information through different views, experiences, ideas, and people, and design is also a communication channel to help people convey these ideas and opinions to the public. In my graduate study, I realized that design should not only be about making beautiful things for the audience to appreciate. Design can be functional and a multi-level communication practice that helps people solve problems in life and bring a better experience.

I have great enthusiasm for brand design and web design and development. I am very attracted by the diversity and richness brought by each customer. I very much hope to explore different brand designs. I believe that there is a unique story behind each brand. I love to help different brands convey their voices and leave an unforgettable impression on users. I attach great importance to assisting customers in making designs that represent ideas and sounds. I also enjoy assisting brands in conveying their ideas and stories through design better, helping them attract more users and bring a better experience to users. For me, design should not focus on only making things look good but more on how to affect people’s lives and provide a better experience. This is a good and sustainable design, which is also my design goal

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend and I love art. Undoubtedly, we must go to the local art museum, which can help us understand the local art style, and sometimes we can enjoy the world-famous paintings of the master. At the same time, we are also foodies. We will not miss delicious food. I am a person who enjoys new things very much. Instead, I would take them to try the unexpected street delicacies rather than the bustling high-end restaurants. It can be more directly integrated into this area so as to understand the local customs and customs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My progress and creative inspiration come from my life, so my success depends not only on my efforts but also on the guidance and encouragement of the people around me. They have been supporting me like my team behind the scenes. My parents are undoubtedly my most significant support. When I was young, I often doodled, drew on my textbooks, and became addicted to Japanese cartoons. My parents took me to learn painting in the fifth grade of primary school. Since then, I have officially started my art career.

When I entered the undergraduate university, I chose the visual communication design major and began a new exploration of art and design. I have consulted my parents about this choice. Now, it is a correct decision. After four years of undergraduate study, I significantly improved my design skills and design thinking. However, my design research was very limited to printing and physical objects. I want to explore more design possibilities. I want to study abroad, but studying abroad is a choice that needs a lot of financial support. I am very grateful to my parents, who have not hesitated to support my decision. Without them, I can’t go forward boldly without any worries. With the support of my parents, I decided to come to the Savannah School of Art and Design in Atlanta, USA, to continue my postgraduate study and explore more diverse designs.
