We had the good fortune of connecting with Prez Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Prez, tell us about yourself?
Hey I’m a musical artist. I create music that is rooted in hip hop but blends in elements of funk, soul, dance, etc. Part of what sets me apart is the depth/introspection I infuse in my lyrics and my emphasis on collaboration, bringing multiple voices and live instruments into the mix. My music resonates with a wide range of listeners. It tends to have a nostalgic vibe, but with a modern twist so it appeals to audiences of all ages.

Could you share with us more about your journey? What’s something that you are proud of?

I’m proud of the fact that we just wrapped up my first North American tour! The experience was nothing short of a blessing. I learned a lot and I’m excited for the next one.

Getting to where I am now professionally has been challenging to say the least. Navigating the realm of an artist in today’s world is tough. So although I’ve worked hard, focused on execution/honing my craft, and learned a ton about the music business, the glory really belongs to God for allowing me to be in the position that I am in. I’m grateful.

The story behind my EP, HOURGLASS, is that, like many others, I was in my mid-twenties grappling with a sense of urgency to achieve my goals. I was looking at peers and others my age, comparing their journeys to mine and feeling as though time was slipping away. Through the creation of the EP, I was reminded that we all have a unique path. I learned that the key to fulfillment for me was actually trusting God wholeheartedly and pursuing my passion. The EP serves as a reminder to embrace the present moment, recognizing that opportunities may manifest when least expected. There’s still time to realize your dreams. Don’t give up! Other than that, I want people to know that Prez Harris is here to stay and 2024 will be the biggest year yet. We have some fun stuff planned for the rest of 2023 too though, so make sure you follow me and tune in.

Any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?

In my opinion, it all comes down to faith. What or who do you believe in? For me personally, I’m very spiritual and I believe that God has a plan for my life. Being in a creative career, it’s very easy to question yourself, if you can reach the levels of success that you aspire to. When I was at my lowest with the music and was ready to quit, I prayed. I prayed a lot and promised God whatever His will for my life, I’ll do it. In that moment, He told me Don’t Give Up. So, I started being more intentional with music and it led to a lot of opportunities, including a North American tour where “Don’t Give Up” became the theme, message, and top selling shirt. So start with, what do you believe in: God, yourself, your product, the impact, etc. ask yourself how far are you willing to go for what you believe, then Don’t Give Up.

You’re from Chicago, any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When friends come visit me in Chicago, I love taking them out to eat. A great place I’ll usually go to is Time Out Market. It’s easy, because there’s something there for everybody and all of it is good. If we are going to brunch and we have some time, I’ll take them to Batter & Berries, one of the best brunch spots in the city. On a summer afternoon/evening, we’d have to go to Annettes Italian Ice for dessert. If they’ve never tried it, I definitely would take them to Giordanos for deep dish pizza or Harolds for wings (with mild sauce on it). Lastly, we have to stop by Bronzeville Winery for dinner/dessert. One of my favorite restaurants in the city right now.

Other fun things I like to do in Chicago are go to a White Sox or Bulls game, hop on a boat during the summer, and go see Second City. I don’t pop out as much anymore, but if I do I’ll usually stop by Blind Barber or Era.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It takes a village. I owe much of my success to the incredible people in my life, but I would shoutout two groups. First, my family. My dad’s mentorship and emphasis on education, my mom’s unwavering support and care, and my sister Renata’s encouragement and example of how to work hard and enjoy life, have impacted me greatly. Secondly, my fellow FBZ brothers and lifelong friends, Jojo and Foreverxx. Over the years, we’ve accomplished some great things together, but recently we’ve really locked in and are making strides in our creative pursuits. So, keep an eye out for us. God willing, FBZ is going to do major things.
